Turning off the PnP OS features by selecting "UNIX or other" got me up and running. I still have the boot problem, but things are otherwise pretty good :-) One last question... Any idea why, when I boot under Win (at least), my little SMC router loses its authentication to the DSL server? AFAICT it is not trying to be a domain controller, though I don't know for sure because I hardly know for what to look!
