Problem with Efficient Networks SpeedStream card

I am trying to get a Siemens SpeedStream 1020 NIC
(from Efficent Networks) to work under Redhat 9 (Linux
2.4.20-8). lspci lists this card
as an Edimax card. The documentation obtained from
edimax.com indicated that the rtl8139 driver would be
appropriate for this card.
When I tried to load the driver, it failed with the
message:

There were no additional messages in dmesg / syslog.
I then tried running the diagnostic (rtl8139-diag)
which failed to find the card. On probing further, I
found that the ID for this card was missing in the
card list and added this entry to the list
(pcidev_tbl[]):

After addition of the entry, rtl8139-diag was able to
find the card. This is the output with -aem option:

The RTL8139 does not use a MII transceiver.

Autonegotiation expansion 0x0001.
Disconnects 0x0000.

I then tried inserting the card ID in the lists in
rtl8139.c:

On rebuilding the driver and attempting to
insert the module, I still get the same error.
