The machine is net-dead again. 30 minutes ago it could be pinged but
would accept no connections. Now it can't be pinged.  So effective
connectivity this time lasted 30--31 hours.

I suppose I could write a cron script that would bring eth0 down and
bring it back up again every 24 hours. This hardly seems like an ideal
solution though.

Any advice at all would be really gratefully received at this point,
