Newbie looking for some compaq help

All,

 I am a bit new to the world of linux and I am not nearly an expert at
the concept of Kernel compliation. I have RH 8.0 on a Compaq 1700 Laptop
with the Conexant chip in it. I have looked at some of the threads on
the net including Scyld's info and some of the pages on
Linux-laptop.net, but I can't seem to find the right combination. It
seems that most of the info out there is relevant to the 2.2 kernel, and
I am using the 2.4. In addition, even though I have the Kernel headers
in place, make never seems to work - so I can't make pci-scan.o or tulip.o.

Can any of you steer me in the right direction to get this thing to work?
