You need to confirm that the destination you are pinging is routable over eth1.2,
not some other interface (e.g. eth0).

Also, if you are looking at the packets with some netsniffer (e.g. ethereal) you
need to specify eth1 as the device to sniff.  If you specify eth1.2 you will see
untagged packets because they have been stripped/not yet tagged.
