Problem moving from Redhat 7.1 to RedHat 8.0

I manage 2 groups of machines (as well as others) that are giving me
horrendous problems trying to put RedHat 8.0 on them. They are
old Viglen machines. One group are Genie2 and the others are
Contender2's. They contain 'Boomerang' and 'Cyclone' ethernet cards.

I have left one machine at 7.1 and it still works fine, The other 30
machines have all had RedHat 8.0 installed on them and at first all
seemed to be working fine but now I notice that they all lose their
connections to the network after about 5 to 10 minutes after a
reboot.

It could be that in some cases the network card has just gone flakey,
but it would seem a hell of a coincidence if 30 went at once and the
one that I left in a 7.1 machine is still ok!!

Some machines are producing this:

I have only seen this on about half a dozen machines but I would be
interested to know if this meant that they should go in the bin (or
not). The trouble here of course is that I can't easily check the 30
machines. So, does this indicate a hardware error?

Anyway thanks in advance to anyone who can offer advice, either about
the message above, or in general about problems with the 3c59x module
in RedHat8.0.
I did try recompiling the 7.1 3c59x.c file under 8.0 but it still
didn't work.
I also tried updating the BIOS but also no joy.
Also my kernel is 2.4.20-20.8.

Cheers,

Ross
