The driver used to do the equivalent of 'mii-diag -R' upon loading, but
this resets any link that might have been established until that point.  
This is particularly annoying with some Cisco switches that only activate
the port 1 minute after the link was established. I suggested at that time
to make the reset a module option defaulting to disabled (the present 
behaviour), but it didn't happen... It seems that not many people are 
missing it :-)

Well, I've had very good experience over years with 905B and 905C cards 
(notice 905C without X). I only have 4 905CX cards that are in use at the 
moment, so I can't do any testing.

That's also an option :-) You could even do it more or less automatically 
in /etc/modules.conf with a "post-install" statement.
