Thanks for your reply.

You pointed out correctly what was going wrong. I was booting from CD using 
boot: prompt as 'vmlinuz root=/dev/hdb2' I guess that loads the minimal 
kernel only. I did not create boot disk while installing RH 9. Now I ran the 
upgrade option and in the end just created a bootable floppy. When I boot  
from floppy as 'vmlinuz root=/dev/hdb2', everything is fine. I can connect 
to internet, which is what I was looking for. It was pain switching between 
Windows and Linux on my dual boot machine just to browse the internet.
