For example, if you assign a fixed IP on the same subnet to your laptop, you could start "ping" from the laptop; if /proc/interrupts start increasing, it means that it's receiving. For transmission is a bit more difficult, one way would be to watch with tcpdump/ethereal if any packets arrive at the other end (on the laptop, for example). > /proc/dev/net seems ok as well.
