3c556 problems in 2.6 kernel.

I hope someone can help me with this, I have upgraded to
kernel 2.6 on my laptop and am having  trouble getting the
lan working.  It used to work fine under 2.4.  It is a 3c556
mini pci card with modem.

I get this message:

  ***WARNING*** No MII transceivers found!

then it keeps repeating this message:

eth0: command 0x5800 did not complete! Status=0xffff
eth0: command 0x2804 did not complete! Status=0xffff
eth0: command 0x3002 did not complete! Status=0xffff
eth0: command 0x3002 did not complete! Status=0xffff
