A Question on 3c95x driver and Wake-on-LAN

Hello to everybody, my name is Pere Urb=F3n and I'm a sysadmin into the
Autonomous University of Barcelona. Actually I'm working to try to
implement the Wake-On-Lan with two of my Dept. servers where I have some
3Com ethernet cards with the driver 3c95x.

My question is about the Wake-On-Lan proces.

For some diferent reasons the ethernet card that I would wake have no IP
address, but it's up.  If I configure the option enable_wol=3D1 into the
/etc/modprobe.conf, the machine to work with WOL (BIOS, wire into the
motherboard, etc...) and then stop the computer with an init 0 command
the card will not be on, this happen only if the interface that I would
wake up have no IP, but If it have an IP the proces works correctly.

I was thinking that the WOL proces with the magic packet system works
into the ethernet level of the communication, and that no IP address was
necessary. The IP address will be necessary only if the WOL tool send a
packet over the Transport Level ( ex via UDP ). Are this thinks
correctly? Or I miss something? I could not understand why the ethernet
(afecter switching off the computer) was on only if the interface had an
IP...
