Could you elaborate on that? Why is that a very bad idea?

I have an onboard dual NIC (no vortex), but would like to use just
one of them. For consistency with the config files of other servers
I'd like to name it eth0, but it always comes out as eth1.

Some boundary conditions:

* the out-of-band processor on the motherboard only listens to
one of the NICs, so I cannot merely swap the cables.
* Obviosly there is no way to change IRQ/memory address within
the BIOS or deactivate the unused NIC.

So do I have to live with eth1?
