Media errors are not the obvious type that spits out big warning signs...

I'm afraid that you'll have to change the booting procedure a bit, at 
least for one computer with each kind of card and start Linux in a 
different way than kickstart. You should then use vortex-diag and mii-diag 
to check media settings (including the default ones in EEPROM) - normally 
everything should be set to auto/nway.
