The beat goes off

I have a problem. The ethernet cards in my laptop (debian) and my dual booted desktop will talk OK when the desktop is running XP. That is, provided I force XP to run the link at 10M, as it gets 99% failure at 100M. With Linux (Mandrake) on the desktop, I cannot get them to talk at all. I'm currently forcing the 3x59x driver to use 10BaseT-FD (I *do* have a pretty naff PCMCIA card, so I'll believe XP when it seems to be incapable of doing 100). When I play about with the link (i.e. unplugging and re-plugging the cable), the laptop merrily reports "lost link beat", "found link beat" and "autonegotiation complete: 10BaseT-FD selected". However, at the desktop end, it seems to do everything fine, except that it always finishes up with "Negotiation did not complete" (see below). I've tried various combinations of everything. Nothing gets better results. I'm really surprised/irritated that MS manages to at least do 10BaseT-FD. Output on restarting 3c59x from scratch, with the laptop up and running: # modprobe 3c59x vortex-diag.c:v2.14 12/28/2002 Donald Becker ([email protected]) http://www.scyld.com/diag/index.html Index #1: Found a 3c905 Boomerang 100baseTx adapter at 0xc000.
