Throwing out our "own Linux AP hardware" idea... I wonder if the people with the know-how could some how be supported by the community with donations or bounties. WISPs and tinkerers might be able to put together a large enough bounty on specific hardware. Some of these guys make it look pretty easy. If they had $1K infront of them it might help. Is there ANY sub-$60 802.11g SOHO AP that I can do Linux on without being a guru? I think so... But does the WiFi work? I don't know. I would be totally willing to donate to a guru who could pave this path. I will put up $50... and another $50 if the hw is not EOLed within 6 months of the hack.
