you just described pcengines.com WRAP board, with the
only difference mr. Dornier choosed mini-pci instead
of pccard

the x86 thing would easy things because most of us, mortals,
knows x86 because we have PC's. so, if the hardware is
standard enough, you can build/debug on PC and package
it on the unit just when it is ready
