JAVA ME on MIPS Alchemy platform

Hi!

Let's see if there's anyone still using Linux on embedded hardware...

We are currently in the process of choosing the hardware platform for
our next embedded project. It can be described as wired terminal,
therfore mobility is not a concern.

The requirements from the middleware section dictates that JAVA SE or
at least a ME (micro edition) under Linux must be available.

We have a platform at hand which is based on the MIPS Alchemy Au1000
processor.

Now the trouble starts: We were not able to find a JAVA runtime environme=
nt
which supports linux under the Au1000. IBM offers one for MIPS, but for
QNX, not for Linux.

Using Kaffe as a free alternative doesn't seem to be a possible solution
as it is not compiling out of the box on MIPS, and the JAVA version seems
to be outdated, which might cause compatibility problems.

Therefore, I want to ask the question if anyone by any chance has some
experience to share or can provide some information or pointers for this =
topic.

If MIPS is a dead end, what platform could be recommended? Currently we
are favourizing an intel based x86 platform, as most things run out of th=
e box.
