2.4.32pre should compile standalone as normal (make config; make, etc.)
under 2.6.  Alternatively you can apply the patch to the kernel and
compile in the kernel tree. Patches are in the kernel/patches directory
of the archive.

For 2.4.31 the patch is the only way to go.
