OK - I just tried the 2.4.24 patch against 2.4.30 and 

  5 out of 38 hunks FAILED -- saving rejects to drivers/md/raid1.c.rej

but that was all.  And it all those 5 rejects seemed easy to patch in by
eye (change all segment_lock references to device_lock for the moment
until I look to see which lock is actually being used). The patch was
only confused by the odd extra line or two in the source.

I'll try compiling it now, then send you the patch that I make up, and
you can tell me if it needs _semantic_ changes :-).

(what me? TRY a new kernel? What about my uptime and all the tabs I
have open in mozilla)
