You were right. I was wrong about the devices.

Sorry - apologies for the misleading that resulted.

So, can I create /dev/nda - /dev/nd*n* ? To get 14 devices?

I did that (added to MAKEDEV) - it appeared to work - connections were
apparently made - but then mdadm did not work on top of it.
