Is there any difference between a new-bought disk and a used disk without partitions/objects?

Hi, In user guide, I found that When a new disk is added to a system, the disk shows up in EVMS as a compatibility volume. So I have to delete the volume before use it. What is the difference between a new-bought disk and a used disk without objects? Any special pattern/value in a new-bought disk?
