I'm not really certain, but I'd actually think they were active, since
evmsn should be scanning the state when it starts. Do you see your
volumes in /dev/evms?

Correct on all of those steps. I did this on SLES 10, but the
documentation is:

To boot back to your current setup, you should just need to:
1) Boot into EVMS
2) Disable boot.evms and enable boot.lvm and boot.md
3) Edit fstab
4) Configure grub's menu.lst to boot non-evms (either an entirely
separate line, or editing your current boot line to change the root
device)
5) reboot

You shouldn't need to use a LiveCD to revert your settings, otherwise
everything looks correct to my memory. On a kernel upgrade, it pays to
make sure the installed initrd has evms support. If you have to do it
manually, do mkinitrd -f evms

My experience is, like I said, just with SLES 10, but enabling it is
still a manual process. You might find that Yast's partition manager
hangs after switching to evms
