I did not get an answer from the irc channel, so I copy the info I wrote
here since I have to leave work now.
[14:37:44] <corvy> hello all, I have a strange problem on my raid5 using
evms
[14:38:46] <corvy> in short, it is a large raid5, with 8 PATA disks of 250
GB
[14:39:14] <corvy> two or three times the last few years I have had this
problem, that when one disk gets a pending sector
[14:39:29] <corvy> the whole computer freezes
[14:40:54] <corvy> I just had this problem yesterday and today, I found my
computer frozen in the morning, so I boot it up, and it says I need to
rebuild the raid, so I mark one disk as missing and adds it to the raid
again (after checking file system consistency) I add the disk as a spare and
start resyncing
[14:41:04] <corvy> after a few % it freezez again
[14:41:33] <corvy> so.. I check all disks with smartctl and fine that one
disk has 1 (!) pending sector as the only bad thing
[14:43:17] <corvy> I remove the drive with the pending sector, run the
manufactors test program, run the long test, wait 1 hour, put the disk back
into the raid computer, check it again with smartctl, the pending sector is
gone, and now the sync went smoothly past the % it froze before
[14:43:45] <corvy> so ... my question is, why does this happen? ... 1
pending sector on 1 disk should not make my whole server freeze..
[14:44:12] <corvy> that disk should be marked faulty in the worst case and
then I could treat it ... freezing is over the top
[14:44:48] <corvy> /ranting .. puh :)
Hope for some great info on this topic :-)
