Fwiw, EVMS2 is still shipped by OpenSUSE and part of SLES10. Novell
contributed the iSCSI target feature plugin, OCFS2 fsim and maintains the
cluster specific code related to Heartbeat2 integration. EVMS is also 
part of Novell's Open Enterprise Server 2 (Workgroup services file server
product), used by the now open source Novell Storage Services file
system (aka the Netware file system). Novell fixes offered upstream (here)
have generally been accepted by the IBM folks.

I have switched from Mandriva to Ubuntu a couple months ago, and kept the EVMS 
setup of my system. You just need to boot the usual Ubuntu "Live Desktop" CD, 
then from inside it you can "aptitude install evms", and then you can install 
on your EVMS volumes. Once done, you just need to chroot into the new install 
and make sure to install EVMS and regenerate the initrd before rebooting.

I personally regret very much that an excellent tool such as EVMS is not 
maintained anymore. I've based all the computer and servers I installed 
during the last years on EVMS, and I thought that it being developped by an 
IBM team was a strong sign that it would have a future...

The machines I installed since the beginning of 2007 are now plain old LVM2 
based... That's unfortunate.
