error expanding raid 5

I recently tried doing an expand on a raid 5 and received this error:

Engine: Plug-in MDRaid5RegMgr returned error 5 when committing changes for
region md/md255 during phase 1.

I canceled out and quit without saving changes and now when I open evms I
see this message:

MDRaid5RegMgr: RAID5 region md/md255 is corrupt.  Too many disks (5) are
active. Whereas the number of raid disks is 4.

This server is in a production environment and a lot of jobs are being
disrupted by this downtime.  Any ideas?
