Boy, this thread just saved me much time and frustration.  Thank you!

I have discovered one more tidbit: When you are converting your EVMS
volumes to compatibility volumes, make sure the volume (or "regions" in
evms-speak) have lvm-legal names.  

EVMS is capable of creating volumes/regions with names that will give
lvm2 fits.  If there are volumes (or presumably volume groups) with
illegal names, vgscan will fail to find any volumes.  The helpful error
message produced in this case goes something like (this is from memory
and may not be 100% verbatim):

    Lost logical volume reference for <volume name>
    Couldn't read all logical volumes for volume group

(In my case, using EVMS on a xen dom0, I was using volume names of the
form <hostname>/<diskname> so that all the volumes for hostX would
show up under /dev/evms/hostX/ --- e.g. /dev/evms/hostX/root,
/dev/evms/hostX/swap, etc.  When I converted to compatibility volumes
I not-so-cleverly tried to maintain the same naming scheme, and ended
up with evms region names like 'hostX/root'.)

PS: For reference, from lvm(8):

    VALID NAMES	

    The following characters are valid for VG and LV names: a-z A-Z
    0-9 + _ . -

    VG and LV names cannot begin with a hyphen.  There are also
    various reserved names that are used internally by lvm that can
    not be used as LV or VG names.  A VG cannot be called anything
    that exists in /dev/ at the time of creation, nor can it be called 
    '.' or '..'.  A LV cannot be called '.' '..' 'snapshot' or
    'pvmove'.  The LV name may also not contain the strings '_mlog' or
    '_mimage'.
