FailSafe requires IP connectivity; the rest it is mostly agnostic about.
Modifying it to do non-IP transports is probably non-trivial.

If you run something over it which looks like ethernet/IP, it should work,
although I am not sure if it is fast enough.

Probably simpler to put ethernet in ;-)
