what are the limitations?

hi there,


kinda new to this list,  and I have read the how-tos and stuff,  but I don't 
really see an easy way to do what I want.

Which is to fail over my databases.   I run RH9.0 with Informix C-Isam 
databases.    Quite a few of them,  actually.

what I am trying to eliminate is a single point of failure.  At present I 
have a spare server that has restores done to it on a frequent basis and in 
the even of a system crash on the live server,  I get a minion to unplug the 
live server's network cable and plug it straight into the standby server's 
nic.

This takes a few seconds,  but means that all data since the last restore 
needs to be re-keyed.


I would like to make this failover automatically,  and somehow pick up where 
the DB transaction log ends - ie,  be sorta invisible to the end users.


I am about to purchase something like a NAS or perhaps even a Network 
Appliances device to store the databases as it would seem a vital point.  I 
don't know whethere the failsafe project can work with that,  or if that is 
the best thing or what I should do instead.


Or even if I am barking up the totally wrong tree.

Any comments,  suggestions pointers in other directoins or to more 
documentation or criticism would be joyfully recieved.  :-)
