One thing I've found that makes things work well, though fully
unsupported by many groups, is to get gcc 3.0.4, or 3.1 soon, and
compile glibc 2.2.5 with that. Then purify it a few times, over and
over. 

Some things that *won't* properly on 2.2.4, especially RH's, will run
properly under a cleanly compiled 2.2.5, using GCC3. I think you could
do the same with gcc2 though, but haven't tried it yet.
