Given what you said above and that I'm using glibc 2.2.2, I'll push ahead
and try once more.
(Funny how asking for support from one company for problems concerning a
competing product raises eyebrows. I do understand... ;-)

Silly me, I didn't see that he had updated his glibc to 2.2.4... AFAIR, RH
7.1 uses 2.2.2.
