It looks like rivafb uses the modedb, so try something like
  video=rivafb:800x600-8@85
instead of a vga= parameter. If this goes in lilo.conf, it will have to
use the append keyword.

drivers/video/modedb.c has a commented list of available modes. It
claims the 1024x768@85 mode has a 70.24 KHz hsync, so use at your own
risk.
