how to use framebuffers with ruby kernel?

I've compiled a ruby kernel (linux-2.6.7-1) and booted
it. It inits my 2 framebuffer devices and creates 2
dummy virtual consoles.

I don't understand how to tell my framebuffer
application (XDirectFB, an X server using the DirectFB
framebuffer library), which virtual console/terminal
to use.

All I know is which framebuffer device each card is. I
know how to tell XDirectFB which fb device to use.

I don't know how that framebuffer device translates
into virtual terminals or consoles, or any of that.

What settings do I activate to get a specific frame
buffer device to be on a specific virtual
console/terminal so that applications using that fb
device don't monopolize all the displays?

:)
