You can actually, as long as you don't enable the framebuffer console. This
sequence should work:

modprobe rivafb
mplayer -vo directfb
rmmod rivafb

Of course you will only have a vga console.

The rivafb driver and nv should nicely coexist.  The nvidia driver is still
not compatible with rivafb.
