Yes, 2.6.x kernels do not support this feature at all, it was removed...
You need to apply
http://platan.vc.cvut.cz/ftp/pub/vmware/matrox-latest/matroxfb-2.6.10.gz
to your 2.6.10 kernel. Then text on both heads should update
(if you use matroxfb, radeonfb or vesafb; other drivers are not
tested as I do not have another hardware).
