Check if you have a /etc/fb.modes.  Then use fbset by doing

fbset 1024x768-60 # where 1024x768-60 can be an entry in fb.modes

If you can, try using linux-2.6.14-rc5-mm1, as there are a bunch of nvidiafb
fixes that might be related to your problem.
