2.4.29 patch problem

I am trying to apply the patches from split-2.4.29.tar.gz.  If I
concatenate all the files into a single patch file, I get a load of hunks.  

ie prepare linux-2.4.29 and linux-2.4.29.orig (actually done from 2.4.28
plus the patch to 2.4.29) then

cat patches/* > patch-posix.acl
patch -p 0 < patch-posix.acl

which I would have thought was right.  If I egrep -v "^Index:" much the
same result.

Is there a magic trick that I have missed?
