Since you do have make installed, are you running the configure script under su? (i've had problems with certain paths not being found) Also, what platform are you building this for (linux, solaris, etc...)? Maybe you should either login as root (which it does look like if you're using bash), or `ssh -l root localhost' to make sure you have all of the correct paths. Maybe you ran a script that changed your environment variables without you knowing. Please give the list some more information.
