[002] - backmeup 0.1.1
by Nick Blundell (http://freshmeat.net/users/blundeln/)
Fri, Jul 22nd 2005 23:34
System :: Archiving :: Backup
About: backmeup is an easy-to-use curses backup script. It uses the simple
concept of "backup destinations" (where files are backed up to) and "backup
sources" (where files for backing up reside) which may be accessed either
locally or remotely using URLs of the supported file-transfer protocols
(eg. SSH, Samba, FTP). Once backup jobs have been configured using the
interface, backmeup can be instructed to run in the background as a
daemon, sending email reports on backup status as required.
Changes: The code was restructured and modularised. Email support was
added and some bugs were fixed. Standardised daemonization is now used.

[010] - ERW 1.0.11 (Release Candidate)
by Sebastiano Vigna (http://freshmeat.net/users/vigna/)
Fri, Jul 22nd 2005 04:30
Database :: Front-Ends
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: User Interfaces
About: ERW (Entities and Relationships on the Web) is an innovative system
for handling complex databases using a Web browser. It uses the most recent
standards endorsed by the W3C to offer to the user a sophisticated
environment, similar to a dedicated client. Moreover, the user interface
is generated in a completely automatic way starting from a conceptual
description of the database by means of an XML-based description language
for entity-relationship schemata. From the same description, you can also
automatically obtain diagrams and documentation. ERW can be used for
content management, in particular when the data is structured along
complex relations.
Changes: This release candidate moves ERW to PHP 5. Due to the massive
usage of references, it was impossible to eliminate call-time referencing
without using reference argument default values, which means that this
release (and subsequent releases) will not work on PHP 4. Developers and
system administrator are invited to test that their PHP 5 installations
are compatible with upcoming releases. Most dependencies on specific PHP 5
non-default configuration settings should have been removed.

"ctype.h" functions were replaced with functions from fxascii.h. These
don't interpret the upper 128 codes and thus are safe to call on UTF-8
encoded Unicode text. The FXColorRing class was added to edit color based
on a hue-ring and saturation/value triangle. The FXKnob widget was added.
A possessive match mode in FXRex was added.

[014] - FRET 0.0.4
by Michael McCarthy (http://freshmeat.net/users/mmccarthy/)
Fri, Jul 22nd 2005 06:08
Software Development
About: FRET is a commandline tool for developers that analyzes and
compares multiple files of a similar format. It prints a table describing
the layout of the data structures in these files. Its goal is to document
the format of undocumented file formats. It uses no specific file format
information, but uses heuristics and statistics, and is designed to
integrate with hex editors and packet filters.
Changes: Multiple files can now be compared and data structures that are
common to more than one file are detected correctly. When comparing files,
sequences of fill bytes are ignored to stop flooding the output. This
version of FRET, although an early development version, is the first to
provide useful and robust output.

security API. Special objects (called trustees) can be bound to every file
or directory. The trustee object can be used to ensure that access to a
file, directory, or directory with subdirectories is granted (or denied)
to a certain user or group (or all except user or group). Trustees are
like POSIX ACLs, but trustee objects can affect entire subdirectory trees,
while ACLs a single file. Trustees works with the 2.6 Linux kernel.
Changes: A buffer size calculation error that could cause memory
corruption was fixed. Several makefile enhancements were made to allow
compilation on kernels newer than 2.6.12.

About: PHP-Mesh is a lightweight templating system where the template
language is PHP itself. This is a mini-port of the SiteMesh templating
system which is incredibly popular with Java Web developers.
Changes: PHP-Mesh no longer requires .phpmeshrc to be in the document
root. It will search from the current URL up to the document root,
correctly handling Apache aliases in the process. Therefore, you can now
run PHP-Mesh on applications which are aliased from outside the document
root, and you can override the decorator used on a per-directory basis
simply by dropping in a different file. The example site has also been

System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Compression
About: Star is a very fast, POSIX-compliant tar archiver. It saves many
files together into a single tape or disk archive, and can restore
individual files from the archive. It includes command line interfaces for
the "tar", "Sun-Tar", "cpio", "pax", and "gnutar" command-line syntax. It
includes a FIFO for speed, a pattern matcher, multi-volume support, the
ability to archive sparse files and ACLs, the ability to archive extended
file flags, automatic archive format detection, automatic byte order
recognition, automatic archive compression/decompression, remote archives,
and special features that allow star to be used for full and incremental
backups. It includes the only known platform independent "rmt" server
program.
Changes: A bug (causing a core dump under certain conditions while
restoring an incremental dump) that was introduced with star-1.5a61 with
adding support for SVr4 cpio hard link extractions was fixed. A bug
(introduced with 1.5a62) that caused star to dump core with "star -c

read, create and display VRML97 files and let the user change the
scenegraph/fields. It also has support for stereoscopic view via
"quadbuffer"-capable stereo visuals, and support for 3D input devices like
a joystick, spaceball, or magnetic tracker.
Changes: A bug with rendering IndexedFaceSets with the "colorPerVertex
false" setting was fixed along with a crash in NodeNurbsGroup::write.

[061] - wmpower 0.4.2
by Noberasco (http://freshmeat.net/users/noberasco/)

Desktop Environment :: Window Managers :: Window Maker :: Applets
System :: Monitoring
About: wmpower is a Window Maker dock application allowing the user to
graphically see (and set) the power management status of his laptop. It
works with both APM and ACPI enabled kernels.
Changes: A memory allocation issue that on rare occasions could make
wmpower crash was fixed, as well as a problem that made wmpower print
forever that it would not fast charge the battery as it was already at
maximum capacity. When calculating battery time and battery is charging,
wmpower now displays the time remaining until the battery is fully charged
instead of how much time would be left if the system was running on battery
power.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: News/Diary
About: wnews downloads and displays RSS news feeds from the Web and
displays them in a curses page-based user interface or in parseable
line-based output. There is support for HTTP gzip compression and
decompression, proxying, key binding, dynamic client, resources
configuration, and HTML parsing. It was developed as an efficient and
simple RSS news client.
Changes: Several enhancements were made to the parsing engine. HTTP
support was improved and a GTK2 interface that can be enabled with the
--with-gtk2 configure option was added. xcut buffer support for console
mode was implemented.

Software Development :: Object Brokering
About: XPLC is a component system that tries to enable the use of
components in a pervasive way. It aims to be easy to use, have low speed
and size overhead, and be language and platform neutral. Basically, the
idea is to leave no excuse for an application not to be component-enabled
(being a component and/or using components).
Changes: Additional work was done on the category system. The module
loader was improved.

Information Management
Information Management :: Document Repositories
Software Development :: Version Control
About: Xtla is the Emacs front-end to the GNU Arch revision control
system. It provides user-friendly wrappers for tla native commands and
some higher level features such as the bookmark manager. The main
features are a PCL-CVS-like interface for tla inventory and tla changes,
an archive browser, good integration in Emacs, a bookmark manager,
integration with ediff, Emacs's graphical diff tool, an interface to view
missing patches from all your partners with a single command, and an
Emacs mode for arch-related files (log files, =tagging- method).
Changes: This release added support for baz and for baz-added commands
like "switch", "annotate", "status", and "resolved". The list of files to
be committed is now displayed in the log buffer (but removed before
committing). Many performances improvements were made and tla-update is
now recursive. The installation and configuration procedure was improved
and a mode for the input file of GNU arch's build-config was added. Better
Gnus support was implemented and support for sealing and fixing archives
was added.

Communications :: File Sharing
Information Management
Internet :: Name Service (DNS)
About: YACY is a distributed Web crawler and also a caching HTTP/HTTPS
proxy. Pages that pass through the proxy are indexed and can be searched
using a built-in HTTP server. YACY peers connect each other and form a
P2P-based index exchange network based on distributed hash tables.
Explicit web crawls can be done locally or collaboratively, forming a
global search and distributed indexing engine for the Web. It also
provides URL filtering with blacklist sharing among other proxy peers,
individual Web/servlet page hosting, a file sharing zone, and a database
engine.
Changes: The overall speed, error handling, and memory management was
enhanced. A snippet computation was added to enrich search results. The
handling of performance settings for remote crawling was simplified.
