Changes: The metadata caching subsystem/media library was ported to use
the new HRel (formerly "Relational") code. While this may not seem so to
the end user, this constitutes a major feature enhancement, and is a
preparation for the HRel Milestone 1 which will be reached at BMPx 0.13.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
About: Campsite is a multilingual content management system (CMS) for news
Web sites. Campsite's user interface was built with the end user
(journalist, editor, publisher) in mind, and it can be configured to suit
different profiles of end users. Campsite follows the print-newspaper
publishing paradigm, so it structures sites by default as Publications >
Issues > Sections > Articles. Campsite works best for medium-to-large-size
online news publications, but it is capable of handling nimbler sites too.
Changes: Arabic language support has been added. Subsection anchors now
have CSS tags so that you can modify their appearance. When pasting into
WYSIWYG editor, all styles except bold and italic will be removed. When
displaying article content, the internal links and the text following them
were not displayed. The template command "if user loggedin" did not work
correctly for IP-based subscriptions. A minor security bug has been fixed
where it was possible to learn the MYSQL password if the attacker had the
ability to snoop on outgoing email messages.

[009] - Chalupa Comic & Content Management System for PHP 0.31

Mon, Oct 31st 2005 17:30
Artistic Software
Communications
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
About: Chalupa creates an almost-bare-bones utility for Web comic authors
to upload and manage their strips. Load on popular comics can be reduced
by utilising the built-in caching system, or strips can be served directly
from the database. Comics can be stored in categories, sorted by date or a
specified comic order, published, withdrawn, edited, and pretty much
anything else you would expect from a file handling system. Included is
functionality to build a proto-CMS Web site around the core comic
functionality, with additional user and news functionality pre-packaged.
Security is the main focus, with salted user passwords, a hotlinking
disabler (without modifying your Apache/IIS config) and comic access
levels.
Changes: The installer has been fixed, and work has been done on a lot of
comic navigation code that was missing. A few admin functions have been
fixed, and internal functionality refined. This release adds the MySQL
port number for the installer.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development :: Code Generators
About: CodeWorker is a versatile parsing tool and a universal source code
generator. It interprets a scripting language for producing reusable,
tailor-made, evolving, and reliable IT systems with a high level of
automation. The file formats to parse are described in an extended-BNF
syntax. Template-based scripts drive the writing of patterns for
generating code or text. The code generation knows how to preserve
protected areas with hand-typed code and provides code expansion,
source-to-source translation, and program transformation. It provides a
native translation of CodeWorker's scripts in C++.
Changes: A feature has been added to code generation to know where the
output comes from. In CodeWorker, an output file is generated by a
template-based script. The #coverage directive asks for the recording of
every script position giving rise to a piece of the output file.

Mon, Oct 31st 2005 19:18
Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup
About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.
Changes: This release makes the update process safer by recognizing more
cases to treat as an update instead of an erase/install, and has quite a
few updates to the build process, particularly support for a new concept
called contexts.

About: gipfel is a tool to find the names of mountains or points of
interest on a picture. It uses a database containing names and GPS data.
With the given viewpoint (the point from which the picture was taken) and
two known mountains on the picture, it can compute all parameters needed
to compute the positions of other mountains on the picture.
Additionally, it can try to guess these parameter if only one mountain is
known on the picture. In this case, a few other peaks need to be marked,
but it is not necessary to know their names. It can also be used to play
around with the parameters manually. But be warned: It is pretty
difficult to find the right parameters for a given picture manually.

[026] - Heirloom Documentation Tools 051031
by Gunnar Ritter (http://freshmeat.net/users/gritter/)
Mon, Oct 31st 2005 13:31
Documentation
Software Development :: Documentation
System
About: The Heirloom Documentation Tools provide troff, nroff, and related
utilities to format manual pages and other documents for output on
terminals and printers. They are portable and enhanced versions of the
respective OpenSolaris utilities, which descend from ditroff and the
historical Unix troff. troff provides advanced typographical features such
as kerning, tracking, and hanging characters. It can access PostScript Type
1, OpenType, and TrueType fonts directly. Internationalized hyphenation,
international paper sizes, and UTF-8 input are supported.
Changes: The "-mpm" macros and the "pm" program for vertical justification
have been added from Plan 9 sources. "eqn" now generates
resolution-independent troff programs; its "-r" option is no longer
needed. The elements of overbars, brackets, and braces align better now,
in particular with respect to PDF documents distilled by Ghostscript. In
the "-man" macro package, ".B" and similar font change macros now accept
more than six arguments.

[044] - logalert 0.3
by Gabriel (http://freshmeat.net/users/chimpa/)
Mon, Oct 31st 2005 05:34
About: logalert is a log file monitor tool which executes a specific
action whenever it matches a string (pattern) occurrence. It reads an
entire file (or starts at the end, just like tail -f) and keeps track of
any changes, waiting for a specific pattern (a syslog process error, a
user login, etc.) and starting an action you define when it finds it. It
uses regular expressions to match the pattern occurrence and executes
commands via shell interaction. It deals with the log rotation and
temporary removals normally used by sysadmins.
Changes: The code was changed to use the PCRE library (Perl Compatible
Regular Expression). It is now possible to grab some string in the regular
expression pattern and use it in the command action as a parameter. Parsing
is done with bison and flex now.

[051] - Object Shell 0.6
by geophile (http://freshmeat.net/users/geophile/)
Mon, Oct 31st 2005 18:47
Utilities
About: Object Shell (osh) is the interpreter for a Python-like language
that supports the composition of commands through piping, similar to pipes
in a Unix shell. However, the key difference is that objects are passed
through the pipes in osh instead of streams of text. The objects passed
between commands can be Python built-ins or complex objects such as dates
and times, database rows, or OS resources. Objects can be automatically
converted to strings for integration with the conventional Unix
environment.
Changes: This release adds cleaner integration with Python functions.
Previously, functions in f, select, etc. received a single argument,
typically a tuple or list, and elements were obtained by subscripting.
Now, the elements of an incoming tuple or list are assigned to arguments.
(If you want to use a tuple argument, prefix the argument declaration with
"*", just as in ordinary Python.) The "spread" command has been replaced by
"expand", which is more general.

maintenance site, and the top level domain .TK.
Changes: Incoming AXFR interoperability with several nameservers has been
restored. Improvements have been incorporated to allow PowerDNS to serve
49% of domains in one of the largest DNS zones. The BIND compatibility
backend has been improved in terms of quality, speed, and memory use,
surpassing the original. DNSSEC record types are now supported. The
recursor has been ported to the new packet/zone-parsing/generating code,
which adds EDNS0, allowing for larger UDP responses. Root-referral
responses have been implemented to quiet older non-compliant nameservers.

Software Development :: Build Tools
Software Development :: Libraries :: Ruby Modules
System :: Archiving
About: Rant is a flexible build tool. The equivalent to a Makefile for
make is the Rantfile, which is actually a valid Ruby script that is read
in by the rant command. It currently features automated testing,
packaging, and RDoc generation for Ruby applications and libraries,
creation of gzipped tar and zip archives on all supported platforms
without additional software, recognition of file changes based on MD5
checksums, dependency checking for C/C++ source files (makedepend is not
required), and more. It can generate a script tailored to the needs of a
specific project, which can be used instead of an Rant installation so
that users aren't dependent on Rant.
Changes: This release introduces tasks with command change recognition and
improved rule support. Besides others, bugs regarding Ruby 1.9 and
1.8.4-preview1 were fixed. Note that the filenames Rantfile.rb and
rantfile.rb aren't recognized as default Rantfiles anymore.

[076] - WiKID Strong Authentication System 2.1
by nowen (http://freshmeat.net/users/nowen/)
Mon, Oct 31st 2005 11:35
Security
Security :: Cryptography
System :: Networking
About: The WiKID Strong Authentication System is a highly scalable, secure
two-factor authentication system consisting of a server, a token client,
and network clients that connect a service such as a VPN or Web page to
the WiKID server to validate one-time passcodes. The user enters their PIN
into the token client, where it is encrypted and sent to the server. If the
PIN is correct, the encryption valid, and account active, the one-time
passcode is generated, encrypted, and returned to the user. It is simple
to implement and maintain, allows users to be validated automatically,
requires no hardware tokens, has a simple API for application support via
a COM object and Java component, supports multiple domains, and supports
replication for fault tolerance and scalability.
Changes: Most one-time-password systems suffer from man-in-the-middle
attacks primarily due to difficulties users have with validating SSL
certificates. The goal of this release is to validate certificates for the
end user, providing an SSH-esque security for Web-enabled applications such
as online banking. It is being released as a patch to the 2.01 server
release, with an updated token client.
