[005] - binpatch for OpenBSD 1.0.0
by Gerardo Santana Gómez Garrido
(http://freshmeat.net/users/santanagomez/)
Fri, Dec 9th 2005 01:00
About: binpatch is a framework for creating binary patches for OpenBSD on
all platforms in a semi-automatic way. It can automatically download the
source patches published on http://www.openbsd.org/errata.html, apply
them, build them, and package the result into binary patches. Unlike the
traditional method of patching the source tree, applying binary patches
requires neither extra disk space to hold the whole source tree,
compilers, nor a powerful enough CPU to build the programs patched in a
reasonable amount of time.

[009] - Conary 0.80.0
by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
Fri, Dec 9th 2005 22:00
Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup
About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.
Changes: This release has a completely rewritten approach to updating
systems. The code is about one quarter the size of the old code, and the
new approach made it possible (or at any rate, much easier) to fix several
subtle update bugs. The username and password for repository access was
separated from repository maps, and a prompt is now displayed when they
are not provided in conaryrc files. The recently added automatic :config
component was disabled.

Information Management :: Document Repositories
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search
About: Contineo is a Web-based document management system. It assists its
users by managing documents in most popular formats. Contineo aims to
fulfill all phases of the document lifecycle. You can create and develop
documents by using office software. With contineo itself, you can publish,
search, and manage the versions of documents. Furthermore, you can
communicate with other users directly or via email.
Changes: If no new bugs are discovered, this is going to be the last beta
before the 2.1 release. A bug in handling spaces in contineo's path were
fixed, and some core libraries were updated. Even though this release is
still beta, it is considered to be much more stable and secure than the
2.0 release.

[011] - convmv 1.09
by Björn JACKE (http://freshmeat.net/users/bjoernjacke/)
Fri, Dec 9th 2005 11:06
About: convmv converts filenames (not file content), directories, and
even whole filesystems to a different encoding. This comes in very handy
if, for example, one switches from an 8-bit locale to an UTF-8 locale or
changes charsets on Samba servers. It has some smart features: it
automagically recognises if a file is already UTF-8 encoded (thus partly
converted filesystems can be fully moved to UTF-8) and it also takes
care of symlinks. Additionally, it is able to convert from normalization
form C (UTF-8 NFC) to NFD and vice-versa. This is important for
interoperability with Mac OS X, for example, which uses NFD, while Linux
and most other Unixes use NFC. Though it's primary written to convert
from/to UTF-8 it can also be used with almost any other charset encoding.
Convmv can also be used for case conversion from upper to lower case and
vice versa with virtually any charset. Note that this is a command line
tool which requires at least Perl version 5.8.0.
Changes: This release works around a bug of Perl 5.8.7 that changed the
behaviour of a Unicode function so that it no longer worked as described
in the docs.

[028] - Java for C++ 0.3
by Stefan Palme (http://freshmeat.net/users/kleiner/)
Fri, Dec 9th 2005 08:30
Software Development :: Code Generators
About: Java for C++ is a tool to generate C++ wrapper classes for existing
Java classes. This tool reads a list of Java class names and creates source
code for C++ classes to wrap them. The implementation of the wrapper
classes uses JNI (Java Native Interface) to call the "real" Java classes.
The C++ API to use these wrapper classes is very close to the API of the
original Java classes. So developers of C++ software can use Java classes
as if they have been implemented in C++.
Changes: This release adds some templates for Makefiles and runscripts.
These files ease the process of creating C++ wrapper classes, including
the generated C++ classes in your own project, and starting the resulting
application.

[031] - libebt 1.2.0
by Ciaran McCreesh (http://freshmeat.net/users/ciaranm/)
Fri, Dec 9th 2005 22:03
Software Development
About: The libebt library provides a clean way of getting human-readable
backtrace messages in C++. It uses the RAII (resource acquisition is
initialization) idiom to manage backtrace stack items without requiring
macros, control structures, or an external debugger.
Changes: Changes in this release include the addition of typedefs for
easier external access to template parameter types, easier control over
whether backtraces are shown with the top or bottom stack item first via
an optional second parameter to the Backtraceable<> method backtrace() and
the BacktraceContext<>::backtrace() static method, the addition of a
Backtraceable<> empty() method for consistency, and compatibility fixes
for old g++ versions.

[032] - LiVES 0.9.5-pre6 (Development)
by salsaman (http://freshmeat.net/users/salsaman/)
Fri, Dec 9th 2005 08:44
Multimedia
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Conversion
Multimedia :: Video
About: LiVES is a simple to use yet powerful video effects, editing,
conversion, and playback system aimed at the digital video artist and VJ.
It uses commonly available tools (Mplayer, ImageMagick, and GTK+), so it
should work on most Unix-like systems. It runs under Linux, BSD, IRIX, and
openMosix (and soon OS X/Darwin). It works with almost all types of video,
and is fully extendable through plugins and the included plugin builder
tool.
Changes: This release changes the timing format again (now the internal
format is in 100ths of a microsecond), fixes a crash in text_overlay and
other effects, mencoder_encoder (improves quality for mjpeg encoding),
transcode encoder (update to transcode 1.0.1), and qtutils encoder, and
adds -fPIC to compile options for livido-plugins (for AMD64 and other
architectures) experimental video jack support, an initial multitrack
window, and jack transport support.

[033] - Mail Avenger 0.7.3
by xxx (http://freshmeat.net/users/fmxxx/)
Fri, Dec 9th 2005 01:04
Communications :: Email
About: Mail Avenger is a highly-configurable, MTA-independent SMTP server.
It lets users run messages through filters like ClamAV and SpamAssassin
during SMTP transactions, so the server can reject unwanted email before
assuming responsibility for its delivery. Other unique features include
TCP SYN fingerprint and network route recording, SPF (sender policy
framework) as a general policy language, qmail-style delivery of extension
addresses, validation of sender addresses through SMTP callbacks, mail-bomb
protection, integration with kernel firewalls, and more.
Changes: The format of the "Received:" headers was changed. The old
format, though legal, gets incorrectly parsed by SpamAssassin, causing
false positives. Since fixing SpamAssassin properly would be hard (because
"Received:" syntax is ambiguous), it is recommended that SpamAssassin users
work around the problem by upgrading to Mail Avenger 0.7.3.

About: Nightwatch is a build scheduler that can be scheduled to do builds
for several build styles, including Maven, Make, and Ant. The tool is
pluggable, so any build style can 'easily' be added. The build results can
be published as a Web site, where individual builds can create their own
project sites. For builds generating reports (like Maven), it can generate
trend reports for long term reporting. Notification of the build results
can be created.

by NXAdmin (http://freshmeat.net/users/NXAdmin/)
Fri, Dec 9th 2005 11:07
Communications
Desktop Environment
Software Development
About: NoMachine NX is a fast terminal server system based on the X11
protocol. In addition, NX also translates and embeds the MS Windows
Terminal Server and VNC protocols into X/NX. NX is an order of magnitude
faster than VNC or X11 and can run on bandwidth as narrow as 10 kBit/sec.
By embedding RDP and RFB, it enables users to compress and accelerate
remote Windows and VNC sessions. NX lets you work fluently even across
slow links like modems. The NX project provides a suite of libraries and
X11 proxying agents implementing efficient compression and optimized
transport of X11, SMB, IPP, HTTP, and arbitrary protocols like audio over
the Internet.
Changes: This release fixes several bugs: the inability to run sessions
without the NX agent encoding, the NX client remaining blocked when
exiting the available sessions GUI, the NX client displaying the
configuration GUI instead of starting a new session, the inability to
retrieve the NX statistics on Windows, and bad conversion from 15 to 16
bpp in RDP sessions. There are improvements in the 16 bpp RDP
decompression routine.

[058] - Valgrind 3.1.0
by sigra (http://freshmeat.net/users/sigra/)
Fri, Dec 9th 2005 11:01
Software Development :: Testing
About: Valgrind is a tool that helps you find memory management problems
in programs. When a program is run under Valgrind's supervision, all reads
and writes of memory are checked, and calls to malloc/new/free/delete are
intercepted. As a result, Valgrind can detect problems such as use of
uninitialized memory, reading/writing of memory after it has been freed,
reading/writing off the end of malloced blocks, reading/writing
inappropriate areas on the stack, memory leaks in which pointers to
malloced blocks are lost forever, passing of uninitialized and/or
unaddressable memory to system calls, and mismatched use of malloc/new/new
[] vs. free/delete/delete [].
Changes: AMD-64 support is much improved, and PPC32 support is good enough
to be usable. Address space management has been overhauled. As a result,
Valgrind should be much more robust with programs that use large amounts
of memory. A side effect of this change is that it is no longer protected
against wild writes by the client. This feature was nice, but relied on
the x86 segment registers and so wasn't portable. Please note that
Addrcheck and Helgrind are still not working. Work is underway to
reinstate them (or equivalents).

It does not require Microsoft Windows, but can use native Windows DLLs if
they are available. It provides both a development toolkit for porting
Windows source code to Unix as well as a program loader, allowing many
unmodified Windows programs to run on x86-based Unixes.
Changes: This release adds many marshaling fixes to rpcrt4, various OLE
improvements and fixes, better audio driver management in winecfg, many
wininet fixes, several Web browser improvements, more dbghelp APIs,
directory objects in wineserver, and lots of bugfixes.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Scientific/Engineering
About: wview is an application that controls a Davis Vantage Pro or
Vantage Pro2 weather station console to retrieve archive records and
current conditions. Archive records may optionally be stored in a
relational database (MySQL or PostgreSQL). At a user-defined interval,
wview will use the archive history and current conditions to generate
weather images (buckets and graphs) and Web pages based on configurable
HTML templates. It supports serial and USB data loggers, as well as
connectivity with a terminal server or serial server via TCP sockets.
Changes: All interprocess messaging was changed to use the new radlib
message router utility. radlib must be upgraded to 2.6.0 or higher before
building/installing this version, and the appropriate wview run script
must also be copied from the 1.9.0 distribution for your platform. The
User Manual section, "4.6 Configure to run at system boot" was updated
with details. A bug in computed data processing when wview is run with a
new station that only has archive records for the current day was fixed.
