System :: Archiving

About: atool is a script for managing file archives of various types (tar,
tar+gzip, zip etc). The main command is aunpack, which extracts files from
an archive. It overcomes the problem of extracting files from an archive
without checking whether the files were located in a subdirectory or in
the top directory of the archive, resulting in files scattered all over
the place by first extracting to a new directory. If there was only a
single file in the archive, that file is moved to the original directory.
It also prevents local files from being overwritten by mistake. The other
commands are apack for creating archives, als for listing files in
archives, and acat for extracting files to standard out.

[007] - C++ Regex Engine 1.02
  by unr_stuart (http://freshmeat.net/users/unr_stuart/)
  Tue, Dec 13th 2005 11:05

Text Processing

About: C++ Regex Engine provides a robust regular expression library for
use in C++. The syntax of the regular expression language is very close to
the Perl 5 standard. The classes given somewhat mirror those found in
Java's regular expression library, but have several improvements. The
intended audience of this package is anyone who does a lot of data parsing
(e.g. sysadmins), people tired of trying to decipher Perl scripts, and
regular expression beginners who know C++. Some knowledge of the STL's
vector and string will come in handy, but isn't necessary.

Changes: This release changes the names and order of the replace function
parameters so that they match the documentation and the rest of the
functions. A bug has been fixed with the static replace function wherein
it would use the previous operations string for matching, not the passed
in string. The version strings have been updated from 0.01a to 1.02.

About: CFL (C Foundation Library) is a C library that simplifies systems
software development on UNIX. The library includes functions for memory
management, string parsing, sub-process execution, filesystem traversal,
I/O, interfaces to IPC mechanisms including pseudo-terminals, shared
memory, semaphores, and other facilities. It also has implementations of
common dynamic data structures like linked lists, queues, stacks, and hash
tables, a real-time scheduler similar in functionality to the cron daemon,
and high-level APIs to Berkeley sockets and other networking functions.
Full API documentation is included.

Changes: This release fixes some compiler warnings, a Mac OS X portability
issue, and a minor bug.

[011] - Computational Linguistics Toolset 1.1.0
  by Wybo Wiersma (http://freshmeat.net/users/wybow/)
  Tue, Dec 13th 2005 10:22

Text Processing :: Linguistic

About: The Computational Linguistics Toolset is a set of tools for
computational linguistics. It contains re-usable code for cleaning,
splitting, refining, and taking samples from corpora (ICE, Penn, and a
native one), for tagging them using the TnT-tagger, for doing permutation
statistics on N-grams (useful for finding statistically significant
syntactical differences between any two sets of tagged texts), and various
examination-tools. The tools themselves are well documented.

Changes: Tools for disambiguating were added. They allow semantic
disambiguation to be done about ten times faster than was possible
previously with only the WordNet::Similarity package. Two extra
corpus-tools for preparing the ICE-corpus for disambiguation were added.

[013] - Database Bean Generator 2.0.6
  by jespo (http://freshmeat.net/users/jespo2005/)
  Tue, Dec 13th 2005 23:04

Database
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Generator is a command line application to facilitate the
construction of small applications that need some database objects. It
isn't a replacement for complex object persistence solutions, like
hibernate or TopLink, but it covers a different target: the little Java
Web applications that don't use sophisticated persistence options.
Generator invocation is simple: just type java -jar generator.jar -xml,
where the config file is an XML config file with the definitions to
connect to the database and generate the bean classes. You can also use
the Ant task.

Changes: Some minor changes were made, like a global basedir option for
all generated classes and an optional directory setting for generated
utility classes. This is the last release for 2.0.x.

  Tue, Dec 13th 2005 11:08

Text Editors :: Integrated Development Environments (IDE)
Text Processing :: Markup :: DocBook
Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML

About: EditiX is a cross-platform and multi-purpose XML editor and XSLT
debugger (1.0 and 2.0), which helps Web authors and programmers use XML
and XML-related technologies, such as XSLT, FO, and XSD schemas. It
provides a lot of functionality within a refined IDE, which guides the
user with intelligent entry helpers, and has real-time XPath location and
syntax error detection. It allows the user to apply an XSLT or FO
transformation, and shows the result in a separate view. It includes
default templates for XML, DTD, XHTML, XSLT, XSD, XML RelaxNG, SVG,
MathML, and XML FO. It can generate schema W3C, DTD or RelaxNG from a
document instance.

Changes: This release fixed various bugs for the content assistant on W3C
Schema. It includes cardinalities, include, the 'all' connector, or the
redefine element. The FOP support has been enhanced to include better
error management and rendering capacity. The dialog location and size
could be wrong; this has been fixed. The Schema generator has been fixed
for namespace and for the document output. The tree actions work for
several documents. Unicode is managed for XPath expression.

  Tue, Dec 13th 2005 11:19

Multimedia :: Graphics
Scientific/Engineering :: Geographical

About: gipfel is a tool to find the names of mountains or points of
interest on a picture. It uses a database containing names and GPS data.
With the given viewpoint (the point from which the picture was taken) and
two known mountains on the picture, it can compute all parameters needed
to compute the positions of other mountains on the picture.
Additionally, it can try to guess these parameter if only one mountain is
known on the picture. In this case, a few other peaks need to be marked,
but it is not necessary to know their names. It can also be used to play
around with the parameters manually. But be warned: It is pretty
difficult to find the right parameters for a given picture manually.

Changes: Heuristics for hidden object detection have been added. GPS
tracks are now displayed with variable width depending on the distance of
the track points. Various bugs have been fixed.

[029] - Jamit 5.0

  Tue, Dec 13th 2005 22:42

Software Development :: Build Tools
Software Development :: Documentation
Software Development :: Quality Assurance

About: Jamit (Java Access Modifiers Inference Tool) allows you to infer
tighter access modifiers for Java code. Analyzing bytecode, it can find
out if fields or methods may be declared private, default, protected, or
final. Engineering software with Jamit can thus help increase hiding and
keep interfaces as small as possible. The most useful application for
Jamit is dead code elimination. Jamit can be used to find out which
methods and classes are unreachable and automatically eliminate the
corresponding code, saving space for binary distributions.

Changes: This version supports Java 5.0 (hence the jump in the version
number). In particular, all Java 5.0 attributes are recognized, and
annotation classes are marked as live as necessary. Also, the bytecode
engine understands the changes to the instruction set (LDC) that come with
Java 5.0.

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation
Scientific/Engineering

About: JGraph is a free, mature, and robust Java Graphing framework that
fully complies with Swing design principles. It contains all the graph
visualization and interaction functionality you might expect in a graph
library, including multiple views, layering, zoom, drag and drop, undo,
automatic expanding and collapsing, routing, and layouts. You can create
stunning workflow editors, call graphs, CAD tools, network diagrams,
database visualization tools, and more. It can also be deployed on the
server-side with a large range of image exporting functionality. It is
fully documented and commercially supported.

Changes: This release fixes an indexing issue that was occurring when
adding new control points to edges. It resolves a selection check using
the cell view in mouse handle. Marquee handler has been added as an
optional serializable field to JGraph, and the listener list in the layout
cache is no longer transient. GraphEd adds new hooks for subclassers and
new examples for serialization, and XML encoding have been added to the
full examples package.

Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Monitoring

About: The Prelude Library (libprelude) is the glue that binds all aspects
of Prelude together. It is a library which enables Prelude components to
communicate with the Prelude Manager. It also makes it easy for third
party software to be made 'Prelude Aware' (able to communicate with
Prelude components). It provide common, useful features used by every
sensor.

Changes: Sets the CreateTime field if the caller does not do it. Works
around an invalid library run path added to the MakeMaker generated
Makefile. Fixes the Perl bindings Makefile generated with DESTDIR appended
twice. If compiling with a recent GnuTLS version, will not link
prelude-adduser with libgnutls-extra. If the user is running a modified
GnuTLS version with the SRP API removed (namely happen on Fedora), this
release warns that GnuTLS should be installed from sources. It fixes
"MissingFunctionMacros" reported instead of the real function name, sets
the keepalive option on the Prelude client socket, buffers make option
printing, and has various bugfixes.

System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: Linux-VServer allows you to create virtual private servers and
security contexts which operate like a normal Linux server, but allow many
independent servers to be run simultaneously in one box at full speed. All
services, such as ssh, mail, Web, and databases, can be started on such a
VPS, without modification, just like on any real server. Each virtual
server has its own user account database and root password and doesn't
interfere with other virtual servers.

Changes: Some minor bugs regarding task accounting and load averaging as
well as an interface visibility issue were fixed. Arch support was
extended (some fixes with endianness and PPC-64). Cleanups in the Disk

Information Management :: Records Management

About: Magellan Metasearch is a modular meta search engine, enabling users
to monitor as many search engines as they want. It provides a complex query
language with standard boolean operators, meta-operators (to search through
pages' metadata), and proximity operators. This language enables users to
perform far more complex queries than what common search engines currently
support. It can be fed any custom sources, since its abstraction layer
manages the search results and their meta tags in a uniform way. In
conjunction with the local process scheduler (such as "cron"), Magellan
enables you to save your requests and replay them later automatically; new
results are sent through email and RSS in realtime. Magellan also provides
full anonymity through smart multi-proxy support.

About: The SAFMQ (Store and Forward Message Queue) message queue server
provides asynchronous, round-trip, assured delivery messaging. Message
publishers send or enqueue a message with the SAFMQ server. The SAFMQ
server stores that message until the point at which the message can be
forwarded on to the client. Message publishers are assured that the
messages are delivered. SAFMQ has been tested in both Win32 and Linux Java
environments.

Communications :: Chat :: Internet Relay Chat
Security

About: SecureServ is an IRC trojan detector. It's much like a virus
scanner, but aimed at IRC networks. Using several methods, including
version checks, behavior analysis, and general pattern matching, it aims
to detect trojans, viruses, and floodbots which connect to your IRC
network. Its "brains" are based on a "Definition file" which contains
information on how to detect trojans. To update detection for new trojans,
you only have to download a new file.

Changes: Several updates were made to support the latest Neostats 3.0
release. Bugs were fixed. Several features, such as flood prevention, have
been moved to a new module, FloodServ. SecureServ now utilizes NeoNet for
reporting of vulnerable hosts for reporting and DNS blacklist support.

  by Dennis Darland (http://freshmeat.net/users/djdarland/)
  Tue, Dec 13th 2005 11:03

About: SODE uses long Taylor series to solve systems of ordinary
differential equations. It generates code to solve the equations in either
Icon (or Unicon) or Maple. Using the Taylor series, estimates are made of
the location and order of poles. An effort is made to adjust H to control
the error. It has worked well in testing, but needs more testing as there
are so many possibilities. To solve STIFF equations, MAX_TERMS may be set.
Differentiation done automatically.
