Wed, Dec 28th 2005 05:03
Education
About: The AKFQuiz package lets you easily make your own quiz games or
learning exercises. These can be used either with grquiz in a graphical
environment (SDL), with crtquiz on a text terminal, or with diaquiz in a
GUI environment. There is also a line oriented variant, linequiz, which
can be used as a backend. A CGI-variant can be installed on a Web server
to offer exercises via the Web. A mkquiz tool that generates an HTML file
for to use with the JavaScript akfquiz5.js is also included. Those can
then be published with any Web-space provider.
Changes: grquiz was ported to libSDL and has limited mouse support.
quizchooser was replaced with gtkquizchooser. An autopackage was created.
The FreeBSD port was given up.

About: ckmame is a program to check ROM sets for MAME, the Multiple Arcade
Machine Emulator. It tells you which ROM files are missing or have an
incorrect checksum, and can delete unknown and unused files from the ROM
sets, and rename or move ROM files.
Changes: The major new feature is that this release fixes all fixable
errors in at most two runs. It renames disks automatically, supports
searching for files in additional directories, detects faked ROMs (correct
CRC, but incorrect MD5/SHA1), adapts mkmamedb-xmame.sh for MAME versions
0.100 and above, drops support for inferring flags/status from CRC (old
MAME versions), deprecates the -u/-U command line options, simplifies ROM
matching logic, and has many new regression tests, causing various
bugfixes.

[029] - Kettle 2.2.1
by Matt Casters (http://freshmeat.net/users/MattCasters/)
Wed, Dec 28th 2005 22:11
Database
Database :: API
Database :: Front-Ends
About: K.E.T.T.L.E (Kettle ETTL Environment) is a meta- data driven ETL
(Extraction, Transformation, Transportation, and Loading) tool. This means
that no code has to be written to perform complex data transformations. It
is possible to create plugins to do custom transformations or access
proprietary data sources. Kettle supports most databases on the market,
and has native support for slowly changing dimensions on most database
platforms.
Changes: Eleven bugs were fixed and eight change requests were
implemented. SFTP job entry, a new Mappings step, and a new Merge Rows
step (to detect changes between data sets) were added. A table name is now
accepted in a field. GroupBy now outputs original rows with the grouping
results. An NVL function was added to the calculator to replace a Null
value with the field value. Error reporting for plugins was improved. jTDS
was upgraded to version 1.2 for better SQL Server 2005 support. An XMLInput
step (which reads any XML file) was added experimentally.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: Tournament Pool and Bracket Tracker contains everything you need to
run a tournament pool. It supports small groups or organizations who wish
to provide an NCAA basketball tournament pool without a lot of
administrative work in calculating up-to-date results and possibilities.
Though it was built with the NCAA tournament in mind, it should be able to
handle most other sport tournament pools. Once a tournament is underway,
users can keep track of their progress as the administrator for a
tournament updates the results of games. Pool adminstrators can choose
from many different scoring systems.
Changes: The major new feature of this release is invitations. This gives
the administrator of a tournament the ability to send out an invitation
URL which, when clicked by a prospective player, will add them
automatically to an appropriate group without administrator involvement.
This release also gives links to the tournament update pages so that you
can easily update the games as they happen, and delegate the authority to
update the games. All screens are properly secured. Various bugfixes have
also been made.

[064] - Web Performance Analyzer 1.1
by Michael Czeiszperger (http://freshmeat.net/users/czei/)
Wed, Dec 28th 2005 10:24
About: Web Performance Analyzer is a Web performance tool that allows
designers to measure, analyze, estimate, and track Web page performance.
It is available as a standalone program and an Eclipse plugin. WPA
captures Web pages as you browse and reveals dynamic HTTP requests,
forwards, and other low-level details that aren't visible from a browser.
But unlike other simple protocol sniffers, WPA can tell you if your Web
pages are getting faster or slower by replaying recorded sessions and
comparing the current performance to previous measurements.
Changes: This release focuses on test case customization. Test cases can
be customized to allow each replay to perform a variation of the original
recording. Alternate values can be substituted for form fields which
allows, for instance, each successive replay to measure the performance of
a different search term. Individual transactions can be edited to customize
the behavior of the test case. Each header and each part of the URL can be
edited. Transactions can also be configured with Modifiers, which change
the value of the request dynamically during the replay.

[065] - WiKID Strong Authentication System 2.1.1
by nowen (http://freshmeat.net/users/nowen/)
Wed, Dec 28th 2005 09:48
Security
Security :: Cryptography
System :: Networking
About: The WiKID Strong Authentication System is a highly scalable, secure
two-factor authentication system consisting of a server, a token client,
and network clients that connect a service such as a VPN or Web page to
the WiKID server to validate one-time passcodes. The user enters their PIN
into the token client, where it is encrypted and sent to the server. If the
PIN is correct, the encryption valid, and account active, the one-time
passcode is generated, encrypted, and returned to the user. It is simple
to implement and maintain, allows users to be validated automatically,
requires no hardware tokens, has a simple API for application support via
a COM object and Java component, supports multiple domains, and supports
replication for fault tolerance and scalability.
Changes: The Mutual Authentication patch was merged to the main server
code. Some minor bugfixes were made. Support for OpenVPN was added.

Desktop Environment :: Window Managers
About: wmii is the next generation of wmi. It is a highly customizable
keyboard-and-mouse-driven X11 window manager that supports conventional,
tabbed, and tiled window management with low memory usage and vi-like user
interaction. Due to a complete rewrite, it is highly modularized and uses a
new configuration and inter-process communication interface, which is
oriented on the 9p protocol of the Plan9 operating system.
Changes: A simplified and much faster configuration subsystem, based on
9base. Many bugfixes and cleanups. Removal of the Cairo backend (which
results in a noticable speedup and simplification of liblitz rendering
routines).

[067] - WordSearch 1.3.4
by craigM (http://freshmeat.net/users/craigmaloney/)
Wed, Dec 28th 2005 10:18
Games/Entertainment :: Puzzle Games
About: WordSearch is a Perl script that generates word search puzzles. It
will generate random word search puzzles, or you can give it a list which
will allow it to generate your own puzzles.
Changes: This release adds a minwordlength switch to configure the
shortest word used from the list, a similarwords switch to allow similar
words (the default is now no similar words), and a useletters switch to
use the letters in the puzzle as the pool of random letters to populate
the puzzle. There are minor bugfixes.

[068] - wview Vantage Pro Weather System 2.0.0
by Mark Teel (http://freshmeat.net/users/mteel/)
Wed, Dec 28th 2005 05:10
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Scientific/Engineering
About: wview is an application that controls a Davis Vantage Pro or
Vantage Pro2 weather station console to retrieve archive records and
current conditions. Archive records may optionally be stored in a
relational database (MySQL or PostgreSQL). At a user-defined interval,
wview will use the archive history and current conditions to generate
weather images (buckets and graphs) and Web pages based on configurable
HTML templates. It supports serial and USB data loggers, as well as
connectivity with a terminal server or serial server via TCP sockets.
Changes: A new SQL background process was added which synchronizes the SQL
table (if SQLDB_ENABLE is enabled in wview.conf) to the entire WLK binary
database even if the records were stored before SQL was enabled. Dial
graphics generation was optimized for a 25% or better improvement in
overall generation times. The "Precip" dials were enhanced so that gross
and net precipitation are depicted.

[070] - xlit 1.8
by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/users/billposer/)
Wed, Dec 28th 2005 10:45
Text Processing
Text Processing :: Linguistic
Text Processing :: Markup
About: Xlit is a program for converting text from one writing system into
another. It allows the user to define a transliteration simply by typing
the input strings in one window and the strings to which they are to be
mapped in another. Transliteration may be restricted to regions bounded by
specified delimiters or their complements. Xlit can also convert one type
of delimiter to another, e.g. from HZ escapes to XML.
Changes: The popup for inserting characters by Unicode codepoint has been
improved. The main improvement is better validation of the codepoint.
