Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering

About: Asymptote is a powerful descriptive vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. Asymptote is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program. It can exploit the best features of
script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI) methods.
High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language itself,
allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.

Changes: Command-line options and environment variables can be set in a
configuration file and at runtime. Boolean options are now negated by
prepending "-no" to the option name. Type-dependent function and record
operators are added to the parent record. Execution stops after the first
error. Two and three-dimensional array min/max functions for all ordered
builtin types were implemented. Comments are allowed within 3D data
blocks. The currentpen nib is respected. The tick computation was fixed
when xaxis and yaxis are called with explicit limits. The -t option is no
longer used and was removed.

System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: This driver allows the Linux kernel to use the ATA over Ethernet
(AoE) network protocol. Using AoE, a Linux system can use AoE block
devices like EtherDrive (R) storage blades. The block devices appear as
local device nodes (e.g. /dev/etherd/e0.0).

Changes: The revalidate function now accesses user memory safely. AoE
device information is now refreshed when the device is finally closed.
Documentation has been improved.

  by napi (http://freshmeat.net/users/napi/)
  Fri, Dec 30th 2005 00:56

Software Development :: Compilers

About: Axiomatic Multi-Platform C (AMPC) is a C compiler suite with an IDE
that generates Java bytecode to produce platform independent applicatons.
It supports a very large subset of ANSI C (1989). It can be used to
develop new applications using C as well as port existing applications
written in C to run on JVM enabled devices. A JNI (JVM Native Interface)
feature is available for calling native C or C++ functions. Also, many
Java methods can be called from AMPC. The asm() directive can be used to
embed Jasmin assembly code within C source code. It is useful for writing
new applications using existing C skill-sets and porting C programs.

Changes: The COMPILE utility has been improved to recompile modified
source files only. Several bugfixes have been made.

[010] - booh 0.8.5
  by Guillaume Cottenceau (http://freshmeat.net/users/gcottenc/)
  Fri, Dec 30th 2005 01:22

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation

About: Booh is a static Web-album generator. It takes one or several
series of photos and videos, and automatically builds static Web pages to
browse them, creating thumbnails, etc. It features automatic rotation of
portrait images, support for videos, preloading, sub-albums support,
themability, a powerful GUI for editing, and more.

Changes: A subalbum may be removed directly in the treeview. The ability
to restore deleted images, videos, and subalbums was added. Pictures may
be sorted by EXIF date. A fix was made for yet another small bug which was
probably triggered by using gtk+-2.8.9 and which prevented booh from
showing the album after merging. Subalbums may be moved directly to the
top or bottom.

  Fri, Dec 30th 2005 09:04

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: bot-trap allows your Web site to automatically ban bad Web robots
(a.k.a. Web spiders) that ignore the robots.txt file. This does not
include Googlebot and other well-behaved robots. The software requirements
are Apache and PHP, but the principles would work with any Web server
setup. The main advantage over other implementations of this concept is
that bot-trap has a manual "unban" feature so that humans can unban, but
robots can't.

Scientific/Engineering :: Chemistry

About: chemicalInventory is an intelligent tool for managing chemical
inventories. You can find chemicals via substructure or text searches,
manage container and shelf locations, check containers in and out, or
transfer containers between users.

Changes: Reports now use JasperReports as their engine. Check-in of a
container can now only be performed by the person that checked out the
container or by an administrator. You can now transfer containers to
yourself. You can only transfer checked-out containers, and both the
sender and recipient of the container must be in the same group at the

[015] - dopewars 1.5.11
  by Ben Webb (http://freshmeat.net/users/benbella/)
  Fri, Dec 30th 2005 08:44

Games/Entertainment :: Simulation

About: dopewars is a UNIX rewrite of the MS-DOS program of the same name,
which in turn was inspired by John E. Dell's "Drug Wars" game. You have
one month to buy and sell drugs on the streets of New York, the aim being
first to pay off your debt to the loan shark and then to make a fortune.
And if you have to shoot a few cops in the process, well... The game
includes TCP networking allowing you to meet (and shoot) other human drug
dealers. Computer drug dealers are currently in development.

[036] - Legion of the Bouncy Castle Java Cryptography API 1.31
  by David Hook (http://freshmeat.net/users/davidhook/)
  Fri, Dec 30th 2005 16:52

Security :: Cryptography
Software Development :: Libraries

About: The Legion of the Bouncy Castle Java Cryptography API provides a
lightweight cryptography API in Java, a provider for the JCE and JCA, a
clean-room implementation of the JCE 1.2.1, generators for Version 1 and
Version 3 X.509 certificates, generators for Version 2 X.509 attribute
certificates, PKCS12 support, and APIs for dealing with S/MIME, CMS, OCSP,
TSP, and OpenPGP. Versions are provided for the J2ME, and JDK 1.0-1.5.

Changes: This release adds support for the DESEDE64 MAC algorithm and MAC
algorithm 3 from ISO 9797. In addition, the streaming model has been
extended to S/MIME, so very large files can also be processed with the
S/MIME API as with CMS. The OpenPGP implementation now provides greater
compatibility with PGP 2, and its ability to recognise master key expiry
times in certifications has been further expanded. Several issues with
X.509 Attribute Certificates, better RFC 3280 compliance for CertPath
validation, and the encoding of large OID fields and Elliptic Curve keys
have also been fixed.

About: A microcall is an XML-dialect used to communicate between a client
and a server in a standard and easy-to-use way. The client part is
(usually) implemented in Java and consists of a simple POJO that can
understand the XML messages returned by the server response to a given
call. The server part is only responsible for returning standard and
correct messages in response to a given call. The server usually does a
lot of work when it receives a call, but from the client standpoint, the
server only returns a message explaining the result of the call.

  Fri, Dec 30th 2005 08:46

Internet
System :: Networking

About: Miredo is a Unix daemon program which implements the "Teredo:
Tunneling IPv6 over UDP through NATs" Internet draft specification. It can
serve either as a Teredo client, a stand-alone Teredo relay, or a Teredo
server. The purpose of Teredo IPv6 tunneling is to provide IPv6
connectivity to users behind NAT devices, most of which do not support
IPv6, and not even Proto-41 forwarding.

Changes: This release can generate ICMPv6 unreachable errors when
appropriate, improves handling of timers, can retry DNS resolution when
the Teredo server fails, uses HMAC for authentication instead of consuming
the system's entropy pool, improves handling of ICMPv4 errors, and includes
many cleanups and optimizations.

[059] - rdup 0.0.4
  by Miek Gieben (http://freshmeat.net/users/miek/)
  Fri, Dec 30th 2005 16:46

System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: rdup is a utility inspired by rsync and the Plan9 way of doing
backups. rdup itself does not backup anything; it only prints a list of
the names of files that have changed since the last backup. Auxilary
scripts are needed to act on this list and implement the backup strategy.
This way rdup can be kept lean and mean.

Changes: Output now includes the file size. Numerous scripts were added;
remote/networked backups are now possible. A lot of documentation was
added and improved.
