  Sun, Aug 13th 2006 14:10

Security :: Cryptography
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Botan is a C++ library of cryptographic algorithms. It includes a
wide selection of cryptographic algorithms (including AES, DES, SHA-1,
RSA, and DSA, among many others). It also support X.509 certificates and
several common certificate-related formats and protocols. It has a high
level interface, is easily portable to most systems and compilers, and
includes a substantial tutorial and API reference.

Changes: This release adds x86 assembler implementations of the MD4, MD5,
and SHA-1 hash functions, which benchmark as being 50-60% faster than the
plain C++ versions. The handling of some obscure runtime errors has been
improved. The test/benchmark application has much better option parsing.
An example that factors integers using Pollard's Rho heuristic was also
added.

[007] - CDemu Kernel Module for Linux 0.8
  by Robert Penz (http://freshmeat.net/users/robertpenz/)
  Sun, Aug 13th 2006 01:51

System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: CDemu (previously Virtual CD Kernel Module for Linux) is a kernel
module for Linux which can simulate a CD drive that contains a CD. It uses
simple cue/bin files as input for the data that should appear on the
virtual disc. It includes a user space program which controls the kernel
module. This is primarily useful for watching an SVCD or mounting the data
track of a bin/cue CD image without burning the data to a real CD.

Changes: This version only supports kernel versions 2.6.16 and higher. The
2.4 series is no longer supported. cdemu now has file access like in a loop
module. It should now work on amd64 and SMP systems. Support for .iso,
mds, .ccd, and .nrg images was added. Some documentation was added.
Bugfixes were made.

Database
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

About: DBSight is a J2EE search platform for rapidly developing search
engines on any relational database, for both beginners and experts. It's
scalable, easy to create, and fast to search. It runs on any
JDBC-supported relational database. It can work on any new systems or old
legacy systems that need full-text search, without changing existing
systems. It's based on the high-performance Lucene API. All parameters are
configurable through Web UI for configuring data retrieval, content
indexing, and displaying templates.

Changes: Support for Tomcat 5.5 was added. Local and server URLs have been
added to the server status page. List size estimation for re-creating
indexing mode was corrected. Options were added to control whether to
search the new indices or not when the old index is not available and
indexing is creating new the indices. sortableTable.vm was fixed for
numeric column matching. setFetchSize is only done when it's a positive
number. sortBy and desc can both support comma separated values. Classpath
is set to WEB-INF/indexingLib if it exists; if not, WEB-INF/lib is used.

[014] - dd_rescue 1.12
  by Kurt Garloff (http://freshmeat.net/users/garloff/)
  Sun, Aug 13th 2006 14:08

System :: Recovery Tools

About: dd_rescue copies data from one file or block device to another. It
is intended for error recovery, so, by default, it doesn't abort on
errors, and doesn't truncate the output file. It uses large block sizes
to quicken the copying, but falls back to small blocks upon encountering
errors. It produces reports that allow you to keep track of bad blocks.

Changes: The options -b and -y have been added. -b logs the numbers of bad
blocks in an ASCII file, suitable for the mke2fs -l option (but beware to
match hard block size with mke2fs). The -y option sets the frequency of
fsync() on the output file; -y 0 results in the maximum speed.

  Sun, Aug 13th 2006 08:23

Desktop Environment :: Fonts
Text Processing :: Fonts

About: The DejaVu fonts are a font family based on the Bitstream Vera
Fonts. Its purpose is to provide a wider range of characters while
maintaining the original look and feel. The family is available as
TrueType fonts and also as third-party packages for various operating
systems, including handhelds.

Changes: Almost 300 new glyphs were added this release. Notable additions
are arrows in Mono and Hebrew in Sans (Hebrew isn't included in the LGC
version). Cyrillic in Sans has been further improved. The addition of the
arrows in Mono means that Mono is now also MES-1 compliant (joining Sans
and Serif, which were already MES-1 compliant in earlier releases). This
release also marks the switch to Unicode 5.0, which means that some glyphs
of the updated standard found their way into DejaVu.

About: KildClient is a MUD client written with the GTK+ windowing toolkit.
It supports many common features of other clients, such as triggers, gags,
aliases, macros, timers, and much more. But its main feature is the
built-in Perl interpreter. At any moment, the user can execute Perl
statements and functions to do things much more powerful than simply
sending text the the MUD. Perl statements can also be run, for example, as
the action of a trigger, allowing you to do complex things.

Changes: This release adds support for highlights (changing the color
and/or style of a line that matches a trigger) and some other features. It
also fixes some bugs.

Software Development :: Documentation
Text Editors :: Documentation

About: Lp4all allows you to document your code directly inside the
language comments, using a simple Wiki-like syntax. It then generates an
HTML browsable version of your code and documentation. It is similar to
the traditional Noweb literate programming tool, except that Noweb doesn't
work when one must use a specific third-party editor to edit the source
code. In Lp4all, documentation is stored in the comments of the language:
the original source code is still directly usable by the language
compiler. Lp4all is also language-agnostic: it doesn't know anything about
functions, methods, constants, or classes.
