Database
Documentation
Information Management
About: AgileWiki is a Java-based wiki that provides a virtual wiki for
each registered user, complete with access control and versioning. The
backend includes a built-in database (which uses flat files) and
communicates via RMI to either a Servlet (packaged as a WAR file) or to a
Swing client. AgileWiki is also both an application platform and a
knowledge management system.
Changes: This version includes some critical features. Caches have been
reduced to avoid out of memory conditions. Resolution of names when
determining an infoset (facit classifiers) excludes the use of classifers,
thus preventing infinite loops. Brace notation was extended with {{{ -> {
and }}} -> }. Empty documents are no longer displayed.

About: fax4CUPS is a very simple shell script that acts as a CUPS backend
for a serial fax modem. Essentially, you print with lpr and the fax is
sent. The nice thing is that you have CUPS around, and this means, for

Communications
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Capture/Recording
About: Liquidsoap is a powerful tool for building complex audio streaming
systems, typically targetting Internet radio stations. It consists of a
simple script language, which has a first-class notion of source
(basically a stream) and provides elementary source constructors and
source compositions from which you can build the streamer you want. There
is no constraint on the streams, in contrast to many other tools which can
only stream one file after another. Moreover, it is not restricted to a
single stream. Finally, it interfaces well with external tools.
Changes: Since 0.2.0, the first quite-stable release, stability was
improved, with uptimes of 42 days and counting. It has also gained new
features, documentation, and is much more usable.

Thu, Aug 31st 2006 23:40
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Browsers
About: Lynx is a fully-featured WWW client for users running
cursor-addressable, character-cell display devices (e.g., vt100 terminals,
terminal emulators running on PCs or Macs, or any other character-cell
display). It will display HTML documents containing links to files on the
local system, as well as files on remote systems running HTTP, HTTPS,
gopher, FTP, WAIS, NNTP, finger, or cso/ph/qi servers, and services
accessible via logins to telnet, tn3270, or rlogin accounts.
Changes: This is a pre-release for 2.8.6 (the same as the development
release 2.8.6dev.19). There are many bugfixes, most of which focus on the
wide-character support. The color-style configuration has been enhanced,
allowing it to simulate the older color configuration, so packagers need
not choose between the two (color-style is now the default).

About: nut is nutrition software to record what you eat and analyze your
meals for nutrient composition. The database included is the USDA Nutrient
Database for Standard Reference, Release 19, which contains 7,294 foods and
140 nutrients. This database contains values for vitamins, minerals, fats,
calories, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, etc., and includes the essential
polyunsaturated fats, Omega-3 and Omega-6. Nutrient levels are expressed
as a percentage of the Daily Value, the familiar standard of food labeling
in the United States, but also can be fully customized. Foods can be added
from recipes or food labels, and nutrient intake can be graphed. The
program is completely menu-driven and there are no commands to learn.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players :: MP3
About: Plait (pronounced "play") is a command-line jukebox and music
player front end. It understands brief, easy to type queries that pick a
single song, mix queries that combine works from multiple artists, and
stream queries that find Shoutcast radio streams. A variety of filters are
available to pick just the music you want to hear. In order to actually
play the music it finds, Plait automatically hands off a playlist to one
of the supported music players, or creates a playlist that you can
manually load.
Changes: This release introduces a Web publishing feature that creates
complete Web sites with MP3 playlists, including an XSPF file, a Web page
that embeds the XSPF Web Music Player, and MP3 files. Publishing is a two
step process that involves running a Plait command and then uploading a
directory to your server. Album cover art can optionally be looked up on
Amazon.com. The robots.txt exclusion protocol is implemented when
accessing the Shoutcast directory (Plait has always respected the
Shoutcast terms of service).

by Adrian Smith (http://freshmeat.net/users/adrianfsmith/)
Thu, Aug 31st 2006 13:29
About: Universal Password Manager (UPM) allows you to store usernames,
passwords, URLs, etc. in an encrypted database protected by one master
password. Its three strongest features are simplicity (it provides a small
number of very strong features with no clutter), the ability to run
cross-platform, and database sharing. Rather than having many separate
databases (home, work, etc.), database sharing allows you store your
database at a remote location (password protected HTTP URL, for example)
and then have UPM automatically keep your local database in sync with the
remote database.
Changes: This release introduces database sharing. Rather than having many
separate databases (home, work, etc.), this feature allows you store your
database at a remote location (password protected HTTP URL, for example)
and then have UPM automatically keep your local database in sync with the
remote database.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: User Interfaces
About: Wt is a C++ library for developing Web applications with an API
that is widget-centric and inspired by existing C++ graphical user
interface APIs. To the developer, it offers complete abstraction of any
Web-specific implementation details. Under the hood, the library uses the
latest techniques (AJAX) to handle user events and update the Web page.
Changes: Wt will now do two-phase rendering for all updates (not only the
initial load) where invisible changes to the DOM are transmitted in the
background. Support has been added for client-side-only event handling.
The GMail composer example has been updated with a ContactSuggestions
popup window that demonstrates use of this new feature. Doxygen
documentation has been cleaned, and examples separated.
