[001] - /etc/net Scripts 0.8.4
 by Pilot (http://freshmeat.net/users/infrastation/)

System :: Boot :: Init
System :: Networking
System :: Systems Administration

About: /etc/net represents a new approach to Linux network configuration
tasks. Inspired by the limitations of traditional configuration
subsystems, /etc/net provides builtin support for configuration profiles,
interface name management, removable device support, full iproute2 command
set support, interface dependency resolution, and a QoS configuration
framework. /etc/net provides support for the following interface types:
Ethernet, WiFi (WEP), IPv6/IPv6 tunnels, PSK IPSec tunnels, VLAN, PLIP,
Ethernet bonding and bridging, traffic equalizer, Pent@NET, usbnet, and
PPP. Due to its modular design, support for new interface types can be
added without overall design changes.

Changes: This release adds bugfixes, new features, and Fedora Core 6
compatibility.

[002] - 3rd Edition Dungeons & Dragons Character Generator 3.1
 by Slicer (http://freshmeat.net/users/slicer/)
 Sat, Sep 16th 2006 23:03

Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing

About: 3rd Edition Dungeons and Dragons Character Generator is an
HTML/JavaScript Web page that allows the user to quickly and easily create
new Dungeons and Dragons characters. The characters can be of any of the
eleven classes, any of the playable races, and may start at any level from
1 to 220. Generation requires some simple input, after which the character
is displayed on a basic character sheet. It allows you to select your
starting stats, add ability points, and pick skills, equipment, feats, and
spells. It runs on most operating systems with most modern browsers.

Changes: The main page and the feats page were cleaned up. Descriptions
were added to the religion section. When running into alignment
restrictions, hints are now given.

Information Management :: Issue Tracking
Security
System :: Monitoring

About: Advchk (Advisory Check) reads security advisories so you don't have
to. It gathers security advisories using RSS feeds, compares them to a list
of known software, and alerts you if you're vulnerable. Since adding
software lists by hand would be quite a boring task, it leverages your
systems package manager for detecting software. Using it can be as simple
as "advchk -F myhost.list". Quite a few CERTs and Vendors also offer
security-relevant RSS feeds, and some usenet gateways like Google Groups
offer RSS subscriptions.

Changes: Support for the equery package manager (Gentoo) was added.

and directories together to preserve structure when data is divided into
disc volumes. This functionality is a tunable threshold that lets you
control the balance between data contiguity and effective disc usage. In
addition, bak2disc also features multi-session support that lets you stop
the writing cycle between volumes and resume it later. Burning is done
on-the-fly, with growisofs for DVDs and cdrecord for CDs.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: Decimail Webmail 3 is an email application written in Javascript.
It is almost entirely client-side, and so has the potential for a rich and
responsive user-interface. The server-side requirement is a Web server, a
simple IMAP-to-HTTP proxy, and any IMAP server; this should result in
lower server load than some CGI Webmail applications. The code is still
relatively new and is not yet suited to widespread deployment.

Changes: This release adds crude support for sending attachments. Other
new features include deleting messages, marking of replied-to messages,
citations in replies, and numerous smaller improvements.

About: Exiv2 is an EXIF and IPTC C++ library that makes reading and
writing Exif and Iptc metadata easy. It provides full Exif makernote and
thumbnail support. The Exiv2 command line utility prints Exif and Iptc
metadata including Makernote tags in various formats, adjusts Exif
timestamps, renames images according to the Exif timestamp, extracts and
inserts Exif and Iptc metadata and JPEG comments, or deletes the thumbnail
or a specific type of metadata from an image.

Changes: This release adds PNG and Sony ARW file format support, both
read-only. Canon makernote tags have been updated, and a few additional
Canon composite tags are now recognized. Reading TIFF and related files is
about six times faster now compared to the previous version, and this
release finally works with Visual Studio C++ 2005 (MSVC 8).

About: FetchYahoo is a Perl script that downloads mail from a Yahoo!
account to a local mail spool. It is meant to replace fetchmail for
people using Yahoo! mail since Yahoo!'s POP service is no longer free. It
downloads messages to a local mail spool, including all parts and
attachments. It then deletes messages unless requested not to. It can
also optionally forward messages to a specified email address and repeat
with a given interval.

Changes: This release works with the new Yahoo Mail Beta interface. It
also fixes an uninitialized variable bug and updates the "es" translation.

[016] - fig2ps 1.3.6 (Stable)
 by Vincent Fourmond (http://freshmeat.net/users/Fourmond/)
 Sat, Sep 16th 2006 11:25

Text Processing :: Markup :: TeX/LaTeX

About: fig2ps is a script for converting xfig files to PS or PDF,
processing text using LaTeX. It is intended to help typeset good quality
documents, where the font on the pictures is exactly the same as the font
in the text. The advantage it has over some other xfig exporters such as
eepic is that you compile the picture only once and not every time you
compile your LaTeX file, giving a great gain in speed with complex
pictures. It should work with LyX.

Changes: Handling of temporary files for large figures was improved. The
program now correctly deals with filenames that include unusual
characters. The user can now forward options to fig2dev. The documentation
has been updated.

[028] - Linux Security Auditing Tool 0.9.4
 by Triode (http://freshmeat.net/users/Triode/)
 Sat, Sep 16th 2006 13:53

System :: Systems Administration

About: Linux Security Auditing Tool (LSAT) is a post install security
auditing tool. It is modular in design, so new features can be added
quickly. It checks many system configurations and local network settings
on the system for common security/config errors and for packages that are
not needed. It has been tested on Linux (Gentoo, Red Hat, Debian, etc.)
and Solaris (SunOS 2.x).

Changes: Explicit CentOS, CaOS, and Fedora Core checks were added. Changes
were made in the umask module. More sys exclusions were added for find in
md5. The openfiles module was sped up. Checks for listening applications
were added. Small problems in the checkx module were resolved.

[029] - log4sh 1.3.6 (1.3.X)
 by Kate Ward (http://freshmeat.net/users/sfsetse/)
 Sat, Sep 16th 2006 22:04

System :: Logging

About: log4sh is a logging framework for shell scripts that works similar
to the other wonderful logging products available from the Apache Software
Foundataion (eg. log4j, log4perl). Although not as powerful as the others,
it can make the task of adding advanced logging to shell scripts easier,
and has much more power than just using simple "echo" commands throughout.
In addition, it can be configured from a properties file so that scripts in
a production environment do not need to be altered to change the amount of
logging they produce.

Changes: The previous release worked well on Linux with Bash, but died
horribly under Solaris and Cygwin, as well as with ksh. Thanks to much
improved unit tests and more testing, this release works properly again
under Linux, Solaris, and Cygwin with the Bourne, Bourne Again, and Korn
shells.

About: Mesk is a PyGtk+ audio player that supports multiple playlists and
plugins.

Changes: Gstreamer 0.10 is now used, and 0.8 is no longer supported.
Multiple playlists can be used at once, with the ability to cut, copy, and
paste between them. Support for Ogg Vorbis was added. Remote (HTTP) audio
and playlist support was added, including HTTP authentication. A context
menu was added to the playlist. The volume can now be controlled using the
mouse wheel, a scale slider, or the context menu. Album covers can now be
loaded from the ID3 tag. The Gajim status plugin now prefixes the tune
status with "♫:" instead of "np:".

[036] - MySQL Backup for lazy sysadmins 0.7
 by Paul Kremer (http://freshmeat.net/users/nofutureuk/)
 Sat, Sep 16th 2006 21:41

Database
System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: mysqlblasy is a Perl script for automating MySQL database backups.
It uses "mysqldump" for dumping mysql databases to the files sytem. It was
written with automated usage in mind. For example, it is silent during
operation, and only produces noise on errors/problems. It rotates backups
automatically to prevent the backup disk from getting full when the
administrator is on vacation (or is lazy).

Changes: The "defaults-extra-file" config option was added, which can be
used instead of specifying the username/password/host directly in the
config file. The "dbhost" config paramater is now also used for the backup
filename. If you use the new "defaults-extra-file" for remote backups, this
key is still needed to set the filename. Code formatting and minor fixes
were done.
