System :: Monitoring

About: akk@da is a simple network monitoring system designed for small and
medium size computer networks. Its purpose is to quick detect system or
network faults, and to display information about detected problems for the
administrator. It is designed as a pro-active network monitor. It does not
wait for information from any agents, systems, etc. It collects
information itself every minute (you can decrease this period to as little
as 1 second if needed). Almost all services of the monitored hosts are
discovered automatically.

Changes: This release fixes some bugs and adds some enhancements like
contacts groups support, network alarms correlation, major changes in the
snmp_generic probe template format that make it more powerful, Cisco
inventory report, etc.

Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: aria2 is a utility for downloading files. It has completely new
design concept from its predecessor, Aria, and is written from scratch.
aria2 has a segmented downloading engine in its core. It can download one
file from multiple URLs or multiple connections from one URL. This results
in very high speed downloading, much faster than ordinary browsers. This
engine in was implemented in a single-thread model. The architecture is
clean and easy to extend. aria2 currently supports HTTP, FTP, and
BitTorrent. It also supports Metalink version 3.0.

Changes: This release adds the ability to limit download speed. The code
of limiting upload speed was rewritten and is now more precise than
ever. An exception to the license that allows linking with OpenSSL was
added. Please note that this build cannot resume the HTTP/FTP downloads
of earlier versions of aria2.

[004] - BMP 0.30.0
  by Milosz Derezynski (http://freshmeat.net/users/queuerunner/)
  Sun, Sep 24th 2006 16:38

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players

About: BMP is a media player which provides a very easy-to-use interface
and usage semantics for all tasks, while having extensive standards and
services support under the hood (MusicBrainz, Last.fm radio/scrobbling,
HAL, DBus), yet keeping the details out of the way of the user.

Changes: The Winamp 2.x skinning system was dropped. A Last.FM Player was
added. Stability enhancements to the playback system were made. A lot of
usability enhancements were made; D-Bus interoperability was improved and
made more reliable (crash dialog when the app crashes during DBus
activation.) The music library was greatly improved in stability,
usability, and usage semantics. Audo CD ripping support was included.
Support for Downloads via SoulSeek directly from BMP was added via
MooDriver (see separate project).

Office/Business :: Financial
Utilities

About: Brinance is a commandline financial planning and tracking program,
hoping to be a functional replacement for something like GnuCash for those
who prefer the command line. It does not have all the features of GnuCash,
but it does have a few beyond being a checkbook register: scheduling
transactions in the future, multiple accounts, recurring transactions, and
a Perl module to allow just about any interface to the program to be easily
written.

Changes: Recurring transactions were added, using a cron-like format. The
file format was changed. Transfers were added.

[014] - eXcavator 1.0.3
  by Myron Turner (http://freshmeat.net/users/turnermm03/)
  Sun, Sep 24th 2006 19:39

Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: eXcavator is an XML query processing class for PHP. Queries are
constructed using a small query language, and query results are returned
as either loosely formed or strict XML, in formats suitable for both text
and HTML. One of eXcavator's most useful features is its facility to
insert query results into user-defined templates, which allow for a free
interpolation of user text and the data extracted by the query. It runs on
top of XML_PullParser, but uses a completely independent API. However, it
does offer opportunities to use the facilities of both packages side by
side for programmers familiar with both.

Changes: This release fixes bugs in handling of both _AND_ and _OR_
operators. Where the initial expression in a condition contained the empty
string, the _AND_ and _OR_ operators were missed, as in: [ element => CDATA
!= "" _AND_ . . .] or [element != "" _AND_ . . .].

a graphic interface to view and analyse atomic structural information and
to prepare images for presentations in classes and seminars; teaching
chemistry and physics in secondary schools and universities; science
promotion in schools, exhibitions and science museums.

Changes: The code to build arbitrary ranges of crystallographic directions
belonging to the same family has been completed. Planes and directions can
now be created passing through a given node or between planes with a given
order. The code has been improved to measure lengths between planes,
directions, and atoms. Planes and directions with any order or node can
now be exported and imported to XML GAMGI format. Some numerical bugs have
been fixed, mainly in the code to build directions. This release completes
the 0.11.* cycle of development.

About: GKsu is a GTK+ frontend to the su and sudo programs. It supports
login shells and preserving environment variables, and is useful for
launching graphical programs that need to run as another user.

Changes: Since the last 1.3 version, this is the first high profile stable
release of the gksu application. Together with the changes of libgksu, gksu
now is able to use a global gconf setting to use su or sudo as the backend,
handles "wrong password" better, and other things. An optional nautilus
addon was added, which adds an "Open as administrator" menu item to the
nautilus context menu for various files and folders. This menu item will
open that file using the application that handles its type by default
using gksu.

encoder, and an audio converter. It decodes MP3, MP4 (or M4A or AAC), MPC
(or MPP or MP+), OGG, APE, or FLAC files to wave, then normalizes the wave
and re-encodes it. It can also rip audio CDs, encode audio data, convert
audio formats between MP3, MP4, MPC, OGG, APE, and FLAC, and change the
encoding properties and edit Meta Info (like title, artist, album, etc.)
of the final normalized files.

About: GNU gengetopt takes a simple description of arguments and
generates a C function that uses the GNU getopt_long(3) function to
parse and validate the options. It is perfect if you are too lazy to
write all that is required to call getopt_long(3), or need to use many
options. The generated code also works with autoconf or automake.

Changes: Default values for enumerated options with optional arguments are
correctly handled. Sections are printed in the help output before group
specifications. One can insert text in the output of --help, and can
specify gengetopt command line options in the input file itself. A bug in
the parsing of multiple option dimensions and a bug in the generation of
long help strings have been fixed.

in fear at the ASCII fireball-breathing Dragons, Beholders, Vampires, and
even the occasional Goblin.

Changes: More monsters were added, such as copperhead snake and nastier
spirits. Pause and help screens were added. Exits are no longer next to

About: gscan2pdf is a GUI to ease the process of producing PDFs from
scanned documents. You scan one or several pages in with File/Scan, and
create a PDF of selected pages with File/Save PDF. At maturity, the GUI
will have similar features to that of the Windows Imaging program, but
with the express objective of writing a PDF, including metadata. Scanning
is handled with SANE via scanimage. PDF conversion is done by libtiff.
Perl is used for portability and ease of programming, with gtk2-perl for
the GUI. This should therefore work more or less out of the box on any
system with gtk2-perl, scanimage, and libtiff.

Changes: Pages can be reordered with drag and drop. Toolbar buttons, tool
tips, a view menu, some documentation, a help viewer, and PDF compression
options were added. Window handling was improved.

About: mockpp is a platform-independent generic unit testing framework for
C++. Its goal is to facilitate developing unit tests and integration tests
in the spirit of Mock Objects, EasyMock, and jMock. It includes a slightly
modified version of CxxTest as a framework for flow control and analysis,
but also works with CppUnit or Boost.Test.

Changes: A new class RandomStub creates random numbers based on
std::rand() within a given range. There is better support for pkg-config.

[053] - monotone 0.30
  by Nathaniel Smith (http://freshmeat.net/users/njsmith/)
  Sun, Sep 24th 2006 23:46

Software Development :: Version Control

About: monotone is a distributed version control system with a flat peer
model, cryptographic version naming, meta-data certificates, decentralized
authority, and overlapping branches. It works out of a transactional
version database stored in a regular file, and uses a custom network
protocol for efficient database synchronization.

Changes: Many operations are much faster. Most notably, pulling is
approximately twice as fast, operations that calculate branch heads
("heads", "update", "commit", ...) are much faster, and fixing a memory
leak in Botan has made large checkout operations much faster as well. The
output from "status", "annotate", and "pluck" has been improved.
Conversion of changelog messages to UTF-8 now works correctly, and a few
invariant violations have been fixed. Several improvements were made to
the "automate" interface.

[083] - The Bazaar VCS 0.11rc1
  by Robert Collins (http://freshmeat.net/users/robertc/)
  Sun, Sep 24th 2006 18:16

Software Development :: Version Control

About: Bazaar is a simple decentralized revision control system.
Decentralized revision control systems give users the ability to branch
remote repositories to a local context. Users can commit to local branches
without requiring special permission from the branches that they branched
from.

Changes: This release candidate contains many critical and important
bugfixes, smart server transport, and performance tuning.

[084] - Ultimate++ 609-dev3 (Development)
  by Daniel Kos (http://freshmeat.net/users/unodgs/)
  Sun, Sep 24th 2006 17:04

Software Development
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Debuggers

About: Ultimate++ is a cross-platform C++ rapid application development
suite. It includes set of libraries (for things like GUI and SQL) and an
integrated development environment. Rapid development is achieved by smart
and aggressive use of C++ rather than through fancy code generators. In
this respect, U++ competes with popular scripting languages while
preserving C/C++ runtime characteristics. Its integrated development
environment, TheIDE, introduces modular conception to C++ programming, and
can be used to develop non-U++ applications.

[085] - Universal Password Manager 1.3
  by Adrian Smith (http://freshmeat.net/users/adrianfsmith/)
  Sun, Sep 24th 2006 11:36

About: Universal Password Manager (UPM) allows you to store usernames,
passwords, URLs, etc. in an encrypted database protected by one master
password. Its three strongest features are simplicity (it provides a small
number of very strong features with no clutter), the ability to run
cross-platform, and database sharing. Rather than having many separate
databases (home, work, etc.), database sharing allows you store your
database at a remote location (password protected HTTP URL, for example)
and then have UPM automatically keep your local database in sync with the
remote database.

Changes: This release uses the BouncyCastle AES provider to encrypt the
database (PBE with SHA 256 and 256-bit AES-CBC-BC).

SpamAssassin learning support using "sa-learn" if available has been
added. Search results pagination mode has been updated to be more suitable
for large quarantines. A permissions problem on an executable script has
been fixed. A very basic script has been added to simulate the gunzip
command, but without returning an error if files are not gzipped. A

[087] - WxLib 0.31
  by ijw (http://freshmeat.net/users/ijw/)
  Sun, Sep 24th 2006 17:07

Software Development :: Libraries

About: WxLib is a widely resuable C++ library that converts many
facilities that are found in the standard C library into a form that is
more appropriate for use in a C++ context. The library wraps functions for
dealing with threads, files, FIFOs, serial I/O, sockets, and directories.
It focuses on the correct use of C++ functions, and especially on the
correct use of error handling mechanisms.

Changes: WxLib is a C++ library converting average syscalls and C library
functions. The project has progressed from planning status to pre-alpha
status. Due to WyCSeg revisions and added functions, printf/sscanf-like
program coding is made easier.

[088] - wzdftpd 0.8.0
  by pollux (http://freshmeat.net/users/p0l1uX/)
  Sun, Sep 24th 2006 11:55

Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

About: wzdftpd is a modular and portable FTP server, which supports SSL,
IPv6, multithreading, and external scripts. It uses Unix-like permissions
and ACLs, with virtual users and groups. It also supports bandwith
limitation (per user, per group, or globally), group administrators, and
per command authorization.

Changes: New events have been added (WIPE and PREMKDIR), and the scripts
are now able to deny a transfer. Users and groups management has been
rewritten and enhanced. SQL backends support auto- reconnection if
interrupted. Many bugs were fixed, particularly for the MLSD and SITE
vars commands. The documentation has been removed from the package, and
is now located on the wiki.

[091] - yruba 2.6
  by Harald Kirsch (http://freshmeat.net/users/pifpafpuf/)
  Sun, Sep 24th 2006 17:00

Software Development :: Build Tools

About: Yruba provides a rule system similar to make or ant for the shell
(bash). It provides a clear separation between a list of dependencies that
must be up-to-date before the current task can be performed, an explicit
test that checks whether the target is really out-of-date, and a command
that finally makes the target. Everything is plain bash syntax, so there
is no new command language to learn.

Changes: The new function mapFilenames maps file names into another
directory while changing the file extension on the way. It can be used to
create compile targets from Java source files. The speed of function old
was improved.
