Ever wonder why HP has seven consecutive years of Linux market share

leadership? Maybe it's our portfolio of best-of-breed partner products, or
HP value-add in management, high availability, and virtualization. Maybe
it's the integrated, consolidated infrastructure of HP BladeSystem,
single-source accountability and solution support from HP Services in 160
countries, or just our unwavering commitment to the open source community.

Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Modeling
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Analysis

About: The aim of auch is to visualize harmonics in musical recordings and
the effect of analog/digital filters on the spectrum. There are plenty of
tools that visualize the spectrum. The difference here is that one or two
octaves can be focused on, so that notes, chords, and harmonics become
clear. Another feature is that this tool is aimed comparing audio out (eg.
a .wav file) with audio in. This way, external filters added between the
audio output and input of your sound card can be studied.

Changes: A sixth visualisation of harmonics in auch is the "IFS display".
It's a fractal representation of music, based on "Iterated Function
Systems". These IFS systems act as the "recipe" for a fractal derived from
basic harmonic ratios: octave (2:1), perfect fifth (3:2), major third
(5:4), and major seventh (~15:8). This display allows you to zoom in on a
slice of the sphere with the fractal image to show more details of that
fractal.

[005] - Axiomatic Multi-Platform C 1.5.2 (Mac OS X)
  by napi (http://freshmeat.net/users/napi/)
  Wed, Nov 1st 2006 06:16

Software Development :: Compilers

About: Axiomatic Multi-Platform C (AMPC) is a C to Java class file
compiler suite for the development of platform independent applications.
AMPC can also be used to integrate C and Java programs since AMPC's C
functions can directly call numerous Java methods and vice versa. AMPC
supports a very large subset of ANSI C (1989). It can be used to develop
new applications using C as well as port existing applications written in
C to run on JVM enabled devices. A JNI (JVM Native Interface) feature is
available for calling native C or C++ functions. The asm() directive can
be used to embed Jasmin assembly code within C source code. Support for
the SWT (Standard Widget Toolkit) based graphics API is available. J2ME
CDC 1.1 for mobile devices is also supported.

Changes: A bug in operations involving floating point constants was fixed.

About: barvinok is a library for counting the number of integer points in
parametric and non-parametric polytopes based on polylib. For a parametric
polytope, the number of points is represented by either a piecewise
quasi-polynomial or an Ehrhart series.

Changes: This release mainly includes the bernstein library for computing
upper bounds on polynomials over parametric polytopes. It also adds an
experimental tool for parametric integer programming based on Barvinok's
generating function as well as some tools based on generalized basis
reduction.

Information Management :: Issue Tracking
Software Development :: Bug Tracking

About: bug is a simple tracking system for console users. It only depends
on common Unix commands. Its database format is a text file containing
simple tabbed columns which can be even hand-edited. It uses $EDITOR for
submitting or editing the issues and for changing states or priorities. It
relies on four fixed fields: ID, Priority, State, and Subject. There is
also a fifth free-text field for any other information you may want to
store about the issue. There is no database locking or notifications, so
it's mostly for tracking the user's own issues.

Changes: This version fulfills the requirements of its author, and it
seems there are no clear bugs.

  Wed, Nov 1st 2006 10:17

System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: Firewall Builder consists of a GUI and set of policy compilers for
various firewall platforms. It helps users maintain a database of objects
and allows policy editing using simple drag-and-drop operations. The GUI
and policy compilers are completely independent, which provides for a
consistent abstract model and the same GUI for different firewall
platforms. It currently supports iptables, ipfilter, ipfw, OpenBSD pf,
Cisco PIX, and FWSM.

Changes: This version comes with many new features in the GUI and policy
compilers. The GUI is much faster now. New object types "Address Table",
"DNS Name", and "Tag", as well as new rule actions "Tag", "Queue",
"Classify", and "Custom" have been added. Policy compilers have also been
updated, and support the latest features of iptables, pf, ipfilter, ipfw,
and Cisco PIX 7.0.

Security
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: Firewall Builder for PIX hides the complexity of PIX command line
interface and automatically configures options and parameters that
usually make manual configuration a real chore. With this module, the
same workstation running Firewall Builder can create and manage security
policy on Cisco PIX or FWSM firewalls, as well as on firewalls built with
iptables, OpenBSD pf, or  ipfilter.

Changes: This version supports Cisco PIX 7.0 and implements outbound ACLs
and "inspect" commands. It works with Firewall Builder 2.1 and takes full
advantage of its new features, such as new object types and improved
performance.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
System :: Networking

About: GNU Proxyknife (formerly known as phc or proxy hunter customed) is
a program to validate free proxies for LAN users to reach the Internet by
bypassing ISP proxies with strict limits. It can be customized to change
headers (such as User_Agent) in test requests sent to free proxies. You
can also customize it with your own checksite, checksite port, or
checksite key, switch between the CONNECT and GET method, etc., to test
and filter free proxies. It can be used to validate free socks5 proxies
with a connect command, socks4 proxies with a connect command or free HTTP
proxies with a GET or CONNECT method. It can validate free proxies with a
TCP tunnel.

Changes: The proxylist can be read from stdin or from the Web (in URL
mode). The "-I" option was added to switch between file mode and URL mode
and add the "proxyknifeintype" keyword to configuration for the same
purpose. The format of the ChangeLog and NEWS files was updated. Some bugs
were fixed.

  Wed, Nov 1st 2006 21:18

Database
Database :: Front-Ends

About: GsqlR2 is a GTK+ 2 interface to Oracle that aids in Oracle
application development and testing. Its features include a schema
browser, multiple SQL work areas, SQL syntax highlighting, bind variable
entry widgets in the command window, and SQL*Plus-style command scripting.
For SQL statement analysis and tuning there is a tree-style SQL statement
"explain plan" facility and the ability to load SQL statements from the
runtime cursor cache (V$SQL table), Oracle Statspack repository, the
Oracle Automatic Workload Repository in Oracle version 10g, and full AWR
reports.

Changes: Support for the external SQL editor and result viewer of your
choice has been added, executed with F2 and F3 respectively and
configurable in Edit->Preferences. With Linux kernel 2.6.13 or greater,
the Inotify interface is used to sync changes while the editor is still
open. Query output can now be sent to the screen, logged to a file, or
neither if you just want to test the raw select time. Previously, the only
way to get results to a file was to send them to the screen and then save,
which was highly impractical (sometimes impossible) for large result sets.

About: Nuface is a Web-based administration tool that generates Edenwall,
NuFW, or simple Netfilter firewall rules. It features a high level
abstraction on the security policy set by the administrator, and works
internally on an XML data scheme. Its philosophy is to let you agglomerate
subjects, resources, or protocols into meta-objects, and use those meta
objects to generate ACLs, which are then interpreted as netfilter rules by
Nupyf, the internal XML parser. This tool may easily be extended to support
firewall implementations other than Netfilter.

[055] - Parallels Workstation 2.2 Build 2092 (Stable)
  by Parallels (http://freshmeat.net/users/Parallels/)
  Wed, Nov 1st 2006 07:50

About: Parallels Workstation is powerful desktop virtualization solution
that provides the ability to develop, test, and deploy in multiple
operating systems on a single PC. It supports nearly every standard
x86-based operating system, including the entire Windows family, multiple
Linux distributions, Solaris, OS/2, MS-DOS, and FreeBSD, each of which can
be launched and utilized in completely networked, fully portable, totally
independent virtual containers. Since guest operating systems are
self-contained and directly access hardware profiles, users never need to
partition hard drives, allocate system resources, or continually reboot
the host operating system.

Changes: Hypervisor technology is used for stronger, more stable virtual
machines. The program was optimized for hardware virtualization. It uses a
sophisticated virtual machine engine that offers the broadest support of
x86-based operating systems, including the entire Windows family (3.1,
3.11, 95, 98, Me, 2000, XP and 2003), Linux distributions from popular
distributors (like Red Hat, SuSE, Mandriva, Debian, and Fedora Core),
FreeBSD, and "legacy" operating systems like OS/2, eComStation, and
MS-DOS.

[071] - Simple persistence for Java 1.4.0
  by Robert (http://freshmeat.net/users/demonofthesystem/)
  Wed, Nov 1st 2006 14:37

Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Simple persistence for Java is an object/relation mapping framework
for Java. It is designed to be easy to use. There are no XML files to
write, no tables to create, no IDs to generate, and no primary keys to
fiddle with; just point it to the database, check the API documentation
for three basic methods, and code away. It supports transactions,
polymorphism, has its own simple query language (very similar to SQL), and
can handle object references, lists, and maps.

Changes: Basic index handling was added. findSingle() methods were added
for convenience, which return exactly one object or null. View selects
were added, which can be used to select attributes that may span multiple
objects. These can be used to present lists and reports to users, and can
reduce the number of queries required to generate lists/reports
significantly (versus using objects to get the specific attributes). The
returned objects in case of views are Maps, not specific objects, so they
can only be used for presentation.

[082] - Systems of Ordinary Differential Equations 01
  by Dennis Darland (http://freshmeat.net/users/djdarland/)
  Wed, Nov 1st 2006 05:46

About: SODE uses long Taylor series to solve systems of ordinary
differential equations. It generates code to solve the equations in either
Icon (or Unicon) or Maple. Using the Taylor series, estimates are made of
the location and order of poles. An effort is made to adjust H to control
the error. It has worked well in testing, but needs more testing as there
are so many possibilities. To solve STIFF equations, MAX_TERMS may be set.
Differentiation done automatically.

Changes: SODE now uses apfp, an arbitrary precision floating point
implementation. Possible accumulated error is tracked. It now works only
with unicon and requires unicon operator overloading. Both apfp and unicon
are also available on SourceForge.

[086] - tkccrypt 1.0
  by viric (http://freshmeat.net/users/viric/)
  Wed, Nov 1st 2006 21:25

Security :: Cryptography
Text Editors

About: tkccrypt is a small text file editor frontend for Peter Selinger's
ccrypt written in basic Tcl/Tk. The program allows opening and storing
only encrypted files, and it guarantees that the decrypted content is
never written to disk. Its target audience is made up of users who don't
feel confident using a console encryption tool, but need encryption for
some text data. The dependency only on ccrypt and Tcl/Tk makes this
program very easy to run on many Unix systems.

Changes: This release allows Opening, Saving, and Saving As. It keeps
passwords for file session, and asks for new password only if it's the
first save or Saving As.

[092] - yruba 2.7
  by Harald Kirsch (http://freshmeat.net/users/pifpafpuf/)
  Wed, Nov 1st 2006 07:40

Software Development :: Build Tools

About: Yruba provides a rule system similar to make or ant for the shell
(bash). It provides a clear separation between a list of dependencies that
must be up-to-date before the current task can be performed, an explicit
test that checks whether the target is really out-of-date, and a command
that finally makes the target. Everything is plain bash syntax, so there
is no new command language to learn.

Changes: The mapFilenames function was enhanced to allow for the
extensions of mapped file names to be left unchanged.
