Ever wonder why HP has seven consecutive years of Linux market share

leadership? Maybe it's our portfolio of best-of-breed partner products, or
HP value-add in management, high availability, and virtualization. Maybe
it's the integrated, consolidated infrastructure of HP BladeSystem,
single-source accountability and solution support from HP Services in 160
countries, or just our unwavering commitment to the open source community.

[001] - 4tH compiler 3.5a-pre4 (Development)
  by J.L. Bezemer (http://freshmeat.net/users/hansoft/)
  Fri, Nov 3rd 2006 10:44

Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Libraries

About: 4tH is a Forth compiler with a little difference. Instead of the
standard Forth engine it features a conventional compiler. 4tH is a very
small compiler that can create bytecode, C-embeddable bytecode, standalone
executables, but also works fine as a scripting language. It supports over
85% of the ANS Forth CORE wordset and features conditional compilation,
pipes, files, assertions, forward declarations, recursion, include files,
etc. It comes with an RPN calculator, line editor, compiler, decompiler,
C-source generators, and a virtual machine.

Changes: Words for using fractions and matching strings with wildcards
were added to the library. The Development Guide was added to the manual.

[002] - Absolute OS 11.0.2
  by Paul Sherman (http://freshmeat.net/users/psherma1/)
  Fri, Nov 3rd 2006 18:30

About: Absolute OS is a fast Slackware derivative Linux distribution that
uses a Icewm and ROX-Filer window/file manager combination. It comes with
Firefox, The GIMP, MPlayer, K3B, Azureus, Gaim, Frostwire, Gftp, StarDict,
and many other titles all set up and ready to run. Several utilities are
included to ease configuration and management. It is compatible with all
Slackware 11 packages and can be installed just like a Slackware disk,
except that any choice of packages is removed, as it just installs
everything.

Changes: Installation now runs the vidconfig script on first boot to build
a better xorg.conf, with probed monitor ranges and the correct video card
driver. Sound init (in /sbin/initinit) is deleted if a card is not found
(so it will not continue to try after each boot). The font used by the
Fluxbox Meta style (the default) has been fixed. The icewm-session apps
icehint, icewmbg, and icesh are prevented from running on each start; they
were unused. This speeds things up a bit. Anagramarama has a tweaked
dictionary.

Software Development :: Internationalization
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Localization

About: The Adobe Source Libraries (ASL) are a collection of C++ libraries
building foundation technology to allow the construction of commercial
applications by assembling generic algorithms through declarative
descriptions.

Changes: value_t was replaced with a superior any_regular_t
implementation. Significant improvements have been made to numerous widget
implementations on both platforms, as well as improved modal dialog
behavior. Significant GIL updates were made. A Cocoa-to-Carbon bridge was
added to allow for Cocoa routines within the widget library.
Internationalization support was added for the edit_number widget;
automatic formatting is done based on your machine locale.

[006] - AvantSlash 3.9
  by Richard Lawrence (http://freshmeat.net/users/ralawrence/)
  Fri, Nov 3rd 2006 10:41

About: AvantSlash allows you to read Slashdot on a Windows Mobile,
Blackberry, Smartphone, or Palm based device (either online using a Web
browser or offline using an application such as AvantGo), or from an older
WAP enabled mobile phone. It provides you with a cleaner version of the
content, and can even clean up the linked articles for easier reading on
your device.

Changes: The code was updated to support the recent HTML changes to
Slashdot's main page. The user guide was also updated to reflect the fact
that most people browse the content online using Windows Mobile or
Blackberry devices rather than offline using Palm devices.

[007] - basE91 0.6.0
  by Joachim Henke (http://freshmeat.net/users/J0/)
  Fri, Nov 3rd 2006 07:22

Communications :: Email
Internet
Terminals

About: basE91 is an advanced method for encoding binary data as ASCII
characters. It is similar to UUencode or base64, but is more efficient.
The overhead produced by basE91 depends on the input data. It amounts at
most to 23% (versus 33% for base64) and can range down to 14%, which
typically occurs on 0-byte blocks. This makes basE91 very useful for
transferring larger files over binary insecure connections like e-mail or
terminal lines.

Changes: The encoding/decoding routines have been restructured to be
thread-safe, and the syntax of the commandline frontend is more similar to
base64 from the GNU coreutils now.

About: Baudline is a time-frequency browser designed for scientific
visualization of the spectral domain. Signal analysis is performed by
Fourier, correlation, and raster transforms that create colorful
spectrograms with vibrant detail. Conduct test and measurement experiments
with the built in function generator, or play back audio files with a
multitude of effects and filters. The baudline signal analyzer combines
fast digital signal processing, versatile high speed displays, and
continuous capture tools for hunting down and studying elusive signal
characteristics.

Changes: This release adds support for the JACK Audio Connection Kit sound
server, adds a port to SPARC Solaris 10, improves the Output Devices
default and selection logic, and adds several minor fixes to the Play
Deck, Tone Generator, and auto drift.

[009] - BMP 0.33.4 (Development)
  by Milosz Derezynski (http://freshmeat.net/users/queuerunner/)
  Fri, Nov 3rd 2006 14:42

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players

About: BMP is a media player which provides a very easy-to-use interface
and usage semantics for all tasks, while having extensive standards and
services support under the hood (MusicBrainz, Last.fm radio/scrobbling,
HAL, DBus), yet keeping the details out of the way of the user.

Changes: This release adds podcast support (initial, but fully working; to
be finalized for 0.34) and enhances Last.fm support. It fixes a bug which
would lead to the app crashing on restart when the default ALSA subdevice
of a given card was not selected. It improves the performance and
usability of the album view. It fixes bugs related to metadata writing
(id3v2 metadata writing in particular) and problems with album metadata
editing and the albums view. The translations have been updated.

[011] - Brutus 0.9.32
  by Jules Colding (http://freshmeat.net/users/colding/)
  Fri, Nov 3rd 2006 18:25

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Address Book
Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)

About: Brutus is an Exchange connector and development framework that
offers access to all of MAPI and therefore to all versions of Microsoft
Exchange from version 5.5 onwards. It is a complete wrapping of all of
MAPI into a (large) set of CORBA interfaces. It enables any groupware
client to integrate seamlessly into any organization with large Exchange
deployments on an equal footing with MS Outlook. Being based on CORBA, it
is platform independent, and works equally well on Linux, the BSDs,
Windows, or wherever there is a CORBA implementation available.

Changes: Much work has gone into getting evolution-brutus in shape for
inclusion into Fedora Extras. It's not there yet, but progress is being
made in the review. A lot of distribution-specific changes have
accumulated, and it is therefore being released as evolution-brutus
1.1.10. A bad bug related to keyring password retrieval has been fixed in
e-b, and a very bad memory leak has been fixed in Brutus Server.

[018] - cppmake 0.5
  by icanoop (http://freshmeat.net/users/icanoop/)
  Fri, Nov 3rd 2006 10:37

Software Development
Utilities

About: Cppmake is a front-end to make that builds C++ programs with less
effort and more accuracy than writing makefiles manually. Building a C++
program with cppmake is similar to compiling a Java program. The idea is
that you specify a classpath and cppmake will automatically find all the
classes needed by your program. Once found, all of the classes are
compiled and linked into an executable or library. It's similar to
makedepend, but more powerful. The difference between cppmake and
makedepend is that cppmake infers source dependencies from the header
dependencies it discovers and recursively finds all the source
dependencies required to build. It then generates a complete makefile for
the build (without any editing on your part) and actually builds the
executable or library by invoking make.

Changes: This release significantly improves the built-in C preprocessor.
The rudimentary preprocessor offered in 0.4 has been overhauled to
correctly handle nearly all conditional includes. Most notably, complex
#if and #elif conditional expressions are now evaluated correctly. ISO C
trigraph sequences are also now supported.

  by moz (http://freshmeat.net/users/mozillagodzilla/)
  Fri, Nov 3rd 2006 02:22

Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: CrissCross is a small cross-platform C++ library for threading,
console and file I/O, CPU identification (CPUID), and sockets (TCP and
UDP). The main goal is to provide the ability to write a program using
identical calls on the major platforms (Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD,
NetBSD, and Mac OS X) without needing to rewrite code. CPUID is only
currently supported on Linux and Windows running on x86 processors. There
is also theoretical support for IA-64 and x64 processors in 64-bit mode,
but only 32-bit mode has been tested.

Changes: Much of the existing code was disorganized, and so was
recategorized into other namespaces. Documentation is fairly complete now.
Functions in CoreConsole that previously did nothing on non-Windows
platforms now do what they should. UTF-8 support was partially implemented
and is untested.

[025] - dwdiff 1.2.1
  by Alexander (http://freshmeat.net/users/vcub/)
  Fri, Nov 3rd 2006 01:56

Text Processing

About: dwdiff is a front-end for the diff program that operates at the
word level instead of the line level. It is different from wdiff in that
it allows the user to specify what should be considered whitespace, and
in that it takes an optional list of characters that should be considered
delimiters. Delimiters are single characters that are treated as if they
are words, even when there is no whitespace separating them from
preceding words or delimiters. dwdiff is mostly commandline compatible
with wdiff. The default output from dwdiff is the new text, with the
deleted and inserted parts annotated with markers. Command line options
are available to change both what is printed and the markers.

Changes: This release fixes a bug in resetting the color on 64-bit
platforms.

[027] - Exaile 0.2.5b
  by Adam Olsen (http://freshmeat.net/users/synic/)
  Fri, Nov 3rd 2006 01:39

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players

About: Exaile is a media player aiming to be similar to KDE's AmaroK, but
for GTK+. It incorporates many of the features from AmaroK (and other
media players) like automatic fetching of album art, handling of large
libraries, lyrics fetching, artist/album information via the wikipedia,
last.fm support, and optional iPod support (assuming you have python-gpod
installed). In addition, it includes a built in shoutcast directory
browser, tabbed playlists (so you can have more than one playlist open at
a time), blacklisting of tracks (so they don't get scanned into your
library), downloading of guitar tablature from fretplay.com, and
submitting played tracks on your iPod to last.fm.

Changes: A dynamic playlist which fetches similar tracks from last.fm was
implemented. Customization of your OSD was improved. Startup time was
greatly reduced. Many bugs were fixed.

About: Gnome Subtitles is a subtitle editor for the GNOME Desktop. It
supports the most common subtitle formats and allows for subtitle editing,
conversion, and synchronization.

Changes: Bold, Italic, and Underline buttons were added to the toolbar and
as shortcuts. New shortcuts also include selecting the previous and next
subtitles while editing. A new dialog now handles file opening errors. The
Save dialog has major improvements on the filename and subtitle type
selection. The Bug Report window and the About dialog were also improved.
Buttons to report a bug now refer to the correct URL on GNOME bugzilla. A
bug that occurred when undoing a framerate change was fixed. The encoding

Office/Business :: Financial :: Accounting

About: GnuAccounting is an accounting program for writing invoices and
credit memos. It embeds OpenOffice.org and utilizes either the HSQLDB or a
separate MySQL installation.

Changes: This release uses the Nice Office Access library (NOA) instead of
accessing OpenOffice directly. This eliminates the need for a starter
application, since NOA features setting the OpenOffice.org directory at
runtime. This also improves Windows compatibility. Some other bugs have
been fixed as well, e.g. canceled OpenOffice.org operations no longer
result in zombie documents.

[044] - Long Range ZIP 0.17
  by Con Kolivas (http://freshmeat.net/users/conman/)
  Fri, Nov 3rd 2006 02:01

System :: Archiving :: Compression

About: LRZIP is a compression program that can achieve very high
compression ratios and speed when used with large files. It uses the
combined compression algorithms of lzma for maximum compression, lzo for
maximum speed, and the long range redundancy reduction of rzip. It is
designed to scale with increases with RAM size, improving compression
further. A choice of either size or speed optimizations allows for either
better compression than even lzma can provide, or better speed than gzip,
but with bzip2 sized compression levels.

Changes: The default lzma compression window was increased to improve
default compression of very large files. An option for maximum window and
compression settings were added. An option for static build was added. The
lzma source tree was trimmed, making the lrzip tarball much smaller. A much
more informative README was written.

About: NoMachine NX is a fast terminal server system based on the X11
protocol. In addition, NX also translates and embeds the MS Windows
Terminal Server and VNC protocols into X/NX. NX is an order of magnitude
faster than VNC or X11 and can run on bandwidth as narrow as 10 kBit/sec.
By embedding RDP and RFB, it enables users to compress and accelerate
remote Windows and VNC sessions. NX lets you work fluently even across
slow links like modems. The NX project provides a suite of libraries and
X11 proxying agents implementing efficient compression and optimized
transport of X11, SMB, IPP, HTTP, and arbitrary protocols like audio over
the  Internet.

Changes: This release provides the standard package for Mac OS X, and
ships NX components as Universal Binaries. The possibility of deploying
any additional font directories to NX Client for Windows was added. It
also consolidates fixes made on the 2.0 branch and solves a number of
problems, including the consumption of 100% CPU by the X11 agent and the
inability of the client to connect to the font server even if it is
reachable.

  Fri, Nov 3rd 2006 02:07

Security
Security :: Cryptography
System :: Networking

About: strongSwan is a complete IPsec and IKEv1 implementation for Linux
2.4 and 2.6 kernels. It interoperates with most other IPsec-based VPN
products. It is a descendant of the discontinued FreeS/WAN project. The
focus of the strongSwan project is on strong authentication mechanisms
using X.509 public key certificates and optional secure storage of private
keys on smartcards through a standardized PKCS#11 interface. A unique
feature is the use of X.509 attribute certificates to implement advanced
access control schemes based on group memberships.

Changes: Major improvements were done for the monitoring, debugging, and
logging functions for the IKEv2 keying daemon. Informational console
output is now available during connection startup. IKEv1 Mode Config Push
mode was backported from strongswan 2.8.0.

About: VRaptor 2 is a Web-based MVC and IOC framework based on many
frameworks and ideas (Seam, Stripes, Webwork, Hibernate Annotations, etc).
It makes full use of Java 5 Annotations. It favors convention over
configuration, because configuration in XML/properties/annotations is
always easy to make mistakes and repetitive (aka copy and paste in many
places). This framework uses a more imperative approach, instead of having
many XML files to configure lifecycle and other properties. Most of the
settings go inside plain Java objects (POJO), so the team knows exactly
what is going on and where.

About: Xapian is a search engine library. It is written in C++ with
bindings to Perl, Python, PHP, Java, Tcl, C#, and Ruby. Xapian is a highly
adaptable toolkit which allows developers to easily add advanced indexing
and search facilities to their own applications. It supports the
Probabilistic Information Retrieval model and also supports a rich set of
boolean query operators. Omega is a Web site search application built upon
the Xapian library.

Changes: The print-ready API documentation is now PDF instead of
PostScript. Compilation now works out of the box with Red Hat's GCC 2.96,
IRIX with SGI's compiler, MSVC, older compilers lacking <sstream>, and
platforms which need "-lm". Building 0.9.7 with valgrind installed would
fail. The QueryParser now allows prefixed boolean terms to start with a
non-alphanumeric characters. The bindings now wrap Remote::open_writable()
and the "prog" form of Remote::open(), and handle exceptions from
QueryParser::parse_query().
