Multimedia

About: Fido allows you to automatically download the latest editions of
online radio and TV programs and re-encode them to listen to later on your
portable media player or PC. The software supports multiple users and does
not require any special support from the Web sites that provide the
content. It designed to run in the background on a computer with an
"always on" Internet connection. It downloads media files and streams
according to schedules defined by its users.

Changes: This release contains the re-encoding framework, the last piece
of core functionality that was missing. Currently, there exists support
for re-encoding to MP3 only. Substantial improvements have also been made
to the help text and reporting of syntax errors in the client.

About: froofyJIT is a C++ 'syntactic sugar' front-end for Paolo Bonzini's
GNU lightning library for dynamic native code generation. It uses C++'s
powerful language facilities to allow GNU lightning instructions to be
expressed in a more concise way that approximates a 'real' assembly
language.

Changes: The syntax has been changed for the prolog, leaf, and ret
instructions: the user can now specify the number of callee-saved
registers a function will ever use. In addition, these instructions can
now generate more streamlined function prologue and epilogue code on the
x86.

Desktop Environment :: Gnome

About: Griffith is a film collection manager application. Adding items to
the movie collection is as quick and easy as typing the film title and
selecting a supported source. Griffith will then try to fetch all the
related information from the Web.

Changes: A SQLAlchemy transition was made, which means that MySQL and
PostgreSQL are supported. An SQLite3 transition was made on Linux. An
import plugin system was added, and the first import plugin is for CSV.
All movie plugins were updated with new data, such as video codec, audio
codec, audio channels, subtitle format, and "commentary" language. The GUI
was changed, so search data in movie plugins can be selected and details
can be fetched from different movie plugins. The backup zip files are now
smaller. The HTML export plugin was changed. The main list's default
sorting criteria are now configurable. Lots of bugs were fixed.

Uploaded media can be presented to the user as an embedded Flash player, a
download link, or both. Users can create podcasts that feature the full
array of iTunes tag data, so that podcasts can be easily listed with the

[015] - LON-CAPA 2.2.99.1 (Release Candidates)
  by Gerd Kortemeyer (http://freshmeat.net/users/korte/)
  Sun, Dec 24th 2006 19:59

Education
Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)
Education :: Testing

About: LON-CAPA (The LearningOnline Network with CAPA) is a learning
content and course management system. It offers an underlying shared
content pool from which instructors across departmental and institutional
boundaries can assemble granular learning content for their courses. It
has strong assessment capabilities, both formative (homework and in-class
using wireless PDAs) and summative (online and bubblesheet exams), with a
one-source multiple-target strategy for the content. It offers students
portfolio space in which they can stage materials for submission to
projects, and provides a number of tools for synchronous and asynchronous
student-student and student-faculty communication. LON-CAPA scales well
with number of students, as load-balancing is possible across the whole
network of servers at participating institutions.

Changes: This is the second release candidate for version 2.3. It fixes
hint functionality for some short answer problem types, as well as issues
with grading problems by hand. Bugs involving missing fonts and wrapped
figures during generation of printable documents were removed. Filtering
of internal messages is enabled.

[016] - MUNGE Uid 'N' Gid Emporium 0.5.7
  by Chris Dunlap (http://freshmeat.net/users/dun/)
  Sun, Dec 24th 2006 05:48

Security :: Cryptography
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks

About: MUNGE (MUNGE Uid 'N' Gid Emporium) is an authentication service for
creating and validating credentials. It is designed to be highly scalable
for use in an HPC cluster environment. It allows a process to authenticate
the UID and GID of another local or remote process within a group of hosts
having common users and groups. These hosts form a security realm that is
defined by a shared cryptographic key. Clients within this security realm
can create and validate credentials without the use of root privileges,
reserved ports, or platform-specific methods.

Changes: Performance improvements were made to the caching of
supplementary group information. The --group-check-mtime and
--group-update-time command line options were added to munged. A SIGHUP
handler for updating the supplementary group information was added to
munged. Errors encountered at munged exit were made nonfatal in order to
work around a libc6 bug reported on Debian.

  by Robert Grimm (http://freshmeat.net/users/rgrimmm/)
  Sun, Dec 24th 2006 07:13

Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers

About: Rats! is a parser generator for C-like languages (though currently
it only generates parsers in Java). It has been designed so that grammars
are concise and easily extensible. To this end, grammars are organized
into modules that can be easily changed by adding, removing, or modifying
alternatives in individual productions and composed with each other
through module parameters. Furthermore, it relies on ordered choices to
avoid ambiguities, supports syntactic predicates for unlimited lookahead,
and integrates lexing with parsing. Finally, it has extensive support for
automatically generating abstract syntax trees, thus greatly reducing the
need for explicit semantic actions.

Changes: Rats! is now written in Java 5, which means that it uses and
supports generic types. It also includes several small improvements and
bugfixes.

[028] - Turn Watcher 1.1
  by Alexis Wilke (http://freshmeat.net/users/alexis_wilke/)

Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing

About: Turn Watcher is a tool based on Dungeons & Dragons rules. It is
used to track the initiative of your players and monsters. It includes an
option to roll initiative on every round, roll will, listen, and spot, and
it has a status column that shows you the current status of your players.
When you enter a player or monster, you also enter all of its modifiers,
so the computer can take care of rolling all the dice for you. Still want
to roll initiative? You can simply order the characters with the Move Up
and Move Down options.

Changes: This release adds the ability to enter the characters' die rolls
for initiative. The Undo/Redo functionality when linked with the Duplicate
feature has been fixed (it undoes the duplicate action at once). The
initiative has been fixed (the current player is better managed). There
are other fixes and enhancements. The French and Spanish translations have
been finalized. The Linux and Windows versions have been synchronized.
